Now teetering on Diabetes Type 2

Well here I am in my little cabin by the mountains! Only 5 days before we move on the friends and then home but this will do for a nice break.

I saw Dr before we left as as I came back down from 15mg (I got down to 13mg) I felt rather desperate...by the time I got my appt at the weekend I was feeling better but still not how I had been a few weeks ago.

I have decided to try Mx once we get back home and life is back to normal...I am not looking forward it but would like to get down off the steroids to reduce those other issues like hypertension, hypokalemia and now potentially Diabetes Type 2.

I am reeling in shock with these added bonus's over last 2 months....even with the knowledge that they happen it doesn't seem to register until it happens.

I am hoping to get my blood sugar heading in the right direction before Dr decides to add more meds.

Yesterday as we travelled I was torn regarding food. We were both very tired...I'd hardly slept and all my go to snacks for tired travelling were out of bounds. Never before have I noticed how much of a auturoute services shop is taken up with sugar and salt products! Anyhow, I am pleased with myself...I ate healthily and avoided most carbs, salt and sugar...not bad for when you're not in charge of the cooking.

I plan to enjoy good food and avoid salt, sugar and carbs too....as a carniovore I will be asking for half a leg of lamb at each sitting :D

This small cabin is small with a capital S....luckily it's warm down here, so once the morning chill has left we can sit on the deck and gather our thoughts and drink coffee.

It looks like bliss in your little cabin. Where is it?

I want to follow your lead on diet. Carbs make me feel horrible and bloated now - the good body knows. I can't drink alcohol either. At the end of this I will be such a paragon.

I have noticed that about all quick food available and yet individuals get the blame for being over weight and unhealthy.

Let us know how you get on. Happy holidays!

Thank you :)

We're just outside Collioure in SE France...those mountains are the Pyrenees.

I will be doing an Atkinsy style diet...protein and veg. I will be taking some tips from I Quit Sugar....my daughter followed this 2 years ago and made a massive change to her weight and health. The no sodium/low sodium is not so hard as I bought some Potassium Chloride and am getting used to that now. I notice that my mushed up Ratatouille last night (chosen instead a fries) was quite salty. I realise I haven't made Rat this year so will do when we get back, big batches to freeze and of course will not have added salt.

Tonight I am planning on fish for dinner down in the port and will avoid carbs as far as poss. Difficult when sauces are added. The Pineapple Carpaccio I chose without the ice cream was lovely however there was a drizzle of caramel sauce for decor (oh and a small meringue which I gifted to Mark).

pmr-gca-northeast.org.uk/as... - go to page 4 when you get there and read the article by a Lead Dietician on Demistifying Diabetes.

This Lady was a guest speaker at a Support Group meeting and the members, some of whom had Type 1 others with Type 2, told her they had never been advised of many things she had talked about, so we asked her to do an article and we printed it.

It also contains dietary advice and many of the members are now following it and have told us they have improved.

So here we are Day 4 (if you include travelling day). I've eaten such lovely food and 90% I'd say healthy. I've added breakfast back in, boiled eggs, no soldiers. I am running out of our home laid eggs so will have to forgo these on Sunday morning but know I have loads to go back to.

We seem to have eaten fish almost exclusively...and some cheese. I have avoided bread (in France breads are served with your meal) and alcohol (although decided to have a Sangria yesterday in full knowledge of the sugar content). Today, again in full knowledge of potential consequences, I had an ice cream. Being at the beach and on holiday without at least one seems wrong

One of the main symptoms of high blood glucose was peeing 5+ times per night and the last 2 nights on x2. I am hopeful this is a sign my change of eating has had an impact.

We're enjoying eating less and I am looking forward to serving healthier and smaller portions once we get home.

PMR not to bad although I am having to pace myself and wish I was feeling how I felt back in July.

Update:

I can't believe my original post was on 21 days ago....it feels like forever.

I am still on 13mg...this has addressed the PMR symptoms and I am not risking reducing now until I have seen Dr.

I am still waiting for the blood test (this Friday) and the vaccinations (also Friday) and results from the Sleep Apnoea evalution (which was sooo uncomfortable). I wish I could add a photo here....I looked like I had a tracheotomy!

Once all those are in I can go back to Dr's for to plan how to add in Mx and taper the steroids.

I have done well with the low sugar and carbs intake. I lost 1kg on holiday, another a week later and don't know yet if I have lost more, will weigh me later. Some days have had carbs and some days less so. I am still not up to speed with my cooking and planning...that will come. We've only had the house back to ourselves for a few days.

We came back to friends/house sitters who were here for a further 9 days....whilst it was lovely to see them and have them here, I had less time to rest and felt tired and distracted quite a bit. It was such a relief to have our house back to just us and only our needs to cater for.

I am so hopeful that my new regime will show in my blood results....I do want to bring down my blood glucose level at least enough for him to see I can do it without meds.

Roll on Friday.
