Does anyone else get bouts of thrush caused by steroids?

At the moment I am suffering from an unpleasant bout of oral thrush which my GP puts down to taking prednisolone. I have been given a course of tablets but know from experience that it is likely to come back again. Does anyone suffer from this affliction and have any alternative remedies.

Yes, I get frequent bouts of oral thrush. There is an OTC med available which I have found very good, PM me if you would like details. Occasionally one will get bad enough for me to ask the doctor for Nystatin which is the only antibiotic that works on oral thrush. I can now request this over the phone as I've had to do it so often over the last few years.

My problems are perhaps more difficult as I have steroid inhalers for asthma and a steroid nasal spray for chronic Rhinitis.

What OTC med helps thrush? Nystatin makes me violently sick

Yes, I too seem to suffer continually from oral thrush and nothing seems to get rid of it. Nystatin seems to make it worse but like polkadotcom I have steroid inhalers for asthma as well. The only thing I have found to keep it at bay or manageable is a daily dose of natural Greek yoghurt mixed with natural honey (ugh).

I was going to recommend yoghurt but Margaret50 has beaten me to it! The yoghurt must be 'live' so containing the necessary good bacteria which is good for so many problems. I have a small carton daily on my muesli together with a teaspoonful of Manuka honey - another excellent all rounder.

I have found Lamberts Candaway tablets which contain cinnamon plus many other herbs does the trick. Also lots of natural yoghurt. Go sparingly with the honey though because that is what thrust thrives on sugar and foods with yeast.

Manuka Honey is a natural anti-biotic and boosts the immune system. It must have UMF on the label and also best if you can afford the +20. It comes in +5, +10, +12 as well.

Manuka Honey Cream is also brilliant for cuts. Scientists in the UK developed it and it is used in open wounds to combat MRSA.

Hi Loco99 I too get thrush, but not in my mouth,As my weight has increased because of the preds i get it in areas where skin meets skin, I have to have frequent treatments from the doctor, always arranged by phone as I can never get to see him,. He did tell me that thrush is very common when you have to take preds. I hope you improve quickly as mouth ulcers are not nice . Cynthia x
