After years of being in incredible pain every month, to the point I can’t function and heavy bleeding etc I went for a private referral and was very lucky to be able to do so via work. My GP had said none of my symptoms were “concerning” and refused any further exploration. But scans show I have fibroids causing the pain and heavy bleed/sporadic bleeds etc.
After the last 2 worst periods yet I have agreed to have these removed. I am very scared as have never had any kind of surgery but I have had to admit defeat. I can’t go on like this every 20 to 28 days. Some months I’m literally bedridden for days. And it’s not just the pain and heaviness it’s the emotional side of it as well.
However I have read some concerning things today that many have this procedure only for the fibroids to return 6 weeks later so I guess I am looking for anyone that had success with fibroid removal?
I mean improvement for even one month would show these are the cause of my suffering and a longer term solution could be required.
But I’m hoping some have experienced it helping for a relatively long period?

Only a hysterectomy would stop them regrowing, otherwise it’s fairly common to get more and if anyone tells you they disappear after menopause they are talking rubbish because they don’t !
I have read this also!! So this is definitely something I need to discuss at my pre op on Monday, I feel googling this stuff has told me so much rather than the dr telling me
It’s a tough one as they can grow back. Personally I’ve opted to have an hysterectomy to rid me of the problem for good. Not an easy decision at the age of 39 with no children but my fibroid is very large (16 inches) and the risk of blood loss and the possibility of it growing back brought me to my decision.
goodness, mine isn’t that large (at the moment) perhaps why they haven’t suggested this option yet? But I’m definitely going to ask the question tomorrow.
Good luck. I don’t know your age or if you have children but that’s obviously a big factor. Initially on diagnosis when I was 34 and the fibroid was around 11 inches. I was told very forcefully by the doctor to GET PREGNANT! and I was so shocked as I thought they’d just offer to remove it. Simple as that. Completely underestimating the size of the damn thing. Obviously I didn’t take that advice as I had other things going on in my life. In hindsight maybe I should’ve taken the advice but I’m almost 40 now and the symptoms got a LOT worse leading to hospital admissions due to blood loss. Although completely controlled now by the amazing progesterone only pill (who knew?!) which I had to fight for. I’ve decided to bite the bullet and have a hysterectomy as it’s so huge and uncomfortable and I’m at an age now where I’m not sure having a kids would be the best idea. Good luck in whatever you decide and keep us updated if you can xx
oh my goodness! She did also say do you want a baby? We could make that happen?? 😂 I’m 42 and no children and none planned! Almost got to the point I felt my womb was punishing me for that!!
Goodness that sounds awful I’m so pleased you found something to relieve the symptoms 🙏🏻
I hope your op goes well if you do decide on that route. Some I have spoken to all had success with hysterectomy x
Thats what they were like with me! Talking about IVF and I’m thinking, does a fibroid make me eligible for IVF 🤔 It was all very odd. Also the womb thing. My Gran always said, use your womb or something will go wrong with it! 😂 Thank you for your good wishes. I’ve agreed to a hysterectomy but as I’m not high priority, it could be a long wait. I just hope I can have a spinal block rather than general anaesthetic. Good luck with whatever you decide x
hi Kelz21, Are you on HRT or contraception meds at all?
I had a massive fibroid which was heavy and caused some bleeding post menopause. I had been taking HRT for a number of years. I was referred to a consultant gynaecologist and that was when the fibroid was diagnosed. I was advised to stop taking the HRT as this was "feeding" the fibroid. I stopped reluctantly and the fibroid just disappeared after about 2 weeks if I recall correctly. If this is similar to your plight it may be worth asking your gynaecologist if this could be the cause.
Good luck and I hope your situation improves with or without surgery.
