Hi everyone. I hope you are all healing well 😊 I was wondering if anyone has seen any benefits when changing their diets to help with chronic pain? If so what type of foods? Would you recommend any books or professionals to talk to? Thank you

Hi airls8,

I would recommend seeing a dietitian privately as it’s unlikely you’d get a referral on NHS. Even though I qualify for NHS dietician I went private as the waiting times are horribly long. Each persons case will be different depending on the underlying cause and any other health conditions. My aim was help with pelvic pain from endometriosis, adenomyosis and IC but also to gain weight as if always been underweight - thought to not be helped by other chronic illnesses. For me it was mainly a plant based diet with plenty of oily fish, no/low sugar diet, gluten free and dairy free which I already was due to digestive problems. I also add in to my diet where possible and take turmeric and ginger. I hope this helps but definitely don’t do this on your own as your diet could become too restricted and you might suffer deficiencies.

I found reducing gluten and dairy helped... Plus it's a good time for that because there are so many good gluten free choices now.... Also drink more water than usual as I think flushing out your system is good and not many fizzy drinks or alcohol..... Although a glass of wine here and there is okay

I was referred to a dietician within the NHS as I was finding it difficult to find a beneficial diet for slow transit colon and chronic pelvic pain. I didn't have to wait too long for an appointment and the help I received was both informative and made a huge difference . That saying, it could come down to a post code lottery and any underlying health needs.

I have to eat little and often, avoid red meat, mostly have chicken and fish. Bulk up with fruit and veg and plenty of roughage beans, brans, seeds and nuts. Fluids are key at least 2litres a day. I also have limited dairy, small amounts of cheese and yogurts.

Can you tell me your diagnosis? These dietary changes seem to help me some with severe pelvic pain

As said above have slow transit colon, levator-ani syndrome, and have adhesions on bladder, Bowel, abdomen and pelvis. Have had chronic pelvic pain for many years and suffer terrible Bowel spasms. This is helped with specialist physio, meds and botox injections into pelvic floor.

I find that avoiding chocolate, oats, tomato products, citrus, nuts, beans, crackers and most gluten, and drinking a lot of water, help me. Yes, it’s a limited diet, but it helps me.

They used to be mine, but I find it’s not worth eating them. Occasionally, I’ll eat something on the list, but not often.
