Dietary changes in IC

Has anyone tried the paddison diet to treat IC. I know it's for RA however there does seem to be a lot of overlap. I have just been diagnosed with ic and am experiencing intense bladder pressure and frequency.

Also does anyone have any contact details for a biofilm specialist in London?

Many thanks

Sarah

Hi Sarahlouise

I have IC myself and the diet for IC was recommended to me when I was first diagnosed- unfortunately it hasn't really worked/helped and left me very restricted on what I could actually eat. Most sufferers do find it helps them though and they aren't all that restricted on what they can eat so it is worth a try. I haven't heard of the diet you have mentioned so can't really comment on that.

With IC there is no evidence to suggest that it's due to a persistent infection that hasn't been detected otherwise all of the hospitals in London would be trying to identify these bio films. I myself am treated by urologists in London and they were very skeptical about the biofilm hypothesis and suggested that those sufferers who had benefited were suffering from chronic UTIs not bladder pain syndrome/IC. I'd also like to mention though that some sufferers of IC or as it's now called bladder pain syndrome do eventually get better with no further episodes of pain, frequency etc so don't give up hope. Only a small percentage of people will continue to get worsening of symptoms but it's possible they have a very aggressive type of BPS/IC

Unfortunately on this site we can't recommend doctors, but I believe that the doctor you are referring to does work in London but he treats chronic UTIs not IC so I'm not sure if you are hoping to see him to see if you aren't suffering from IC but a chronic UTI? If you google chronic UTI nhs clinic in London it should help narrow down your search. I hope this helps a little. Let us know if you need anything and keep us informed of your progress

Thanks Alaine. I will let you know my progress with the paddison diet. I'm becoming increasingly anxious as I've had bladder pain for 8 weeks. Do you manage well with ic? I'm following the alkaline diet at the moment.

Hi Sarah

I'm being treated by a dr in London who believes that IC and Painful Bladder Syndrome are one and the same thing. He treats using long-term antibiotics. There is a lot of scepticism among urologists about this approach, but also increasing amounts of research by scientists which seems to implicate biofilm infections in a variety of conditions. I understand that I'm not allowed to provide you with his details, but have a look at the bladder-help website and you'll find his name there He's only able to accept private patients at the moment, unfortunately.

Thanks Evie. I booked an appointment last night. The professor is not available till May but I may be able to get a cancellation. If not I'm sure May will come by quickly. Is it helping you?

They are the same condition EvieP but the term IC is now outdated and has been replaced by the name of painful bladder syndrome. Older journals still use the term IC but they are the same condition. Unfortunately I've got a very aggressive type of painful bladder syndrome so have failed all treatments including minor surgery but I've also got an obstruction in my urinary system as well as some other unexpected results from tests. Ive now got to have major surgery but won't talk about that as it's very uncommon to have to go down that route. I've also got endometriosis and adenomyosis as well as other long term medical conditions so it's possible they might have influenced the progression of BPS. Most people do find a treatment or set of treatments that work with them but often it requires long term lifestyle changes such as diet, stress reduction etc
