Dairy

Has anyone found that dairy makes your issues worse? I avoided dairy for about ten days and felt so much better. Yesterday we went out for ice cream. I had a small scoop, about 1/2 cup of mint chocolate chip. Within two hours, I felt so bad and it continues today. Curious what others say about dairy.

Hi,

Yes I avoid all dairy products and anything containing gluten. It does help but the dietician I see privately thinks I have coeliac disease which has been previously missed as a child. I can be tested but I’d need to eat gluten for 12 weeks before having a blood test and biopsy taken. Some doctors don’t bother with the biopsy but this is now the gold standard as not everyone produces the antibodies to gluten.

You might not need to avoid all dairy as some people can tolerate small amounts of dairy or yoghurt. It’s worth experimenting with but if you avoid dairy you must replace it with dairy substitutes such as soya (if you don’t have endometriosis or adenomyosis), almond or coconut. If have these two conditions so avoid soya as it flares up my pain but I have oat, almond and coconut. Also the substitute must be fortified with calcium and other vitamins. I prefer my substitutes to be unsweetened but it’s best to experiment with what you like. I hope this helps

Thank you for writing. I just had a colonoscopy that didn’t show a celiac issue. I think I’m sensitive to many foods though, including gluten, most fruits, nuts, oats etc. I had a blood test that said I wasn’t allergic, but I still think I’m sensitive. I’m nixing the dairy again for a couple weeks to see how I feel. I don’t get much calcium which concerns me (64). Calcium supplements cause me bone pain, so I can’t take them. I tend to live on rice products - the milk is, fortunately, calcium fortified.

Andilynn, what are your symptoms and want did not eating dairy eradicate?

I’ve stayed off dairy, but the rectal discomfort came back anyway - very disappointing. I had a lumbar MRI with contrast yesterday to see if it’s a spinal issue. I doubt it will show anything new. I’ve taken most wheat, honey, sun butter and a few other things out of the diet to see if things improve.

Hi there, unfortunately I have a very sensitive constitution and I find that if I eat too much of the same food i end up being intolerant to it and suffer with psychical symptoms. it sounds as though you are similar. I know it’s hard but try to avoid the foods that cause you to suffer, not easy I know!

I also seem to have become intolerant to things I’ve been eating. I tend to eat the same breakfast, lunch and snack every day. Now I’m wondering if I’ve become intolerant to some of them. Recently I read that eating the same things daily is unhealthy and can makes one’s system be off balance. It makes sense to me, so Im trying to add back in a few things I had cut out. We had beans yesterday which I’ve avoided for a year. They’re high in oxalates which I know causes me issues with muscle pain. So, we’ll see how it goes. I much prefer getting my vitamins and minerals through food rather than supplements.
