I'm considering getting the RHEO amniotic injection. Please reply if you have had one. I want to know the good, the bad and the ugly!

Thanks!

Hi Nancy,

This is still a very experimental area of medicine and I’d advise caution as there isn’t enough data from reputable researchers/researcher institutes to say whether the therapy is of benefit to adults, does the risks outweigh the costs, is it safe for those who may have other chronic health conditions and what are side effects/complications that can occur including risk of infection infection at the injection site etc. I’m sure as with regulated therapies there will always be those that are pro RHEO amniotic therapy and those that might have had it but wouldn’t recommend due to potential side effects or no response to treatment. I know there has over the past decade in particular been an awful lot of hype and excitement around stem cells as they are thought of as one of the biggest potential therapeutic treatments that could benefit those with organ damage/transplants through to those with MS and other neurological deficits. At this stage I would both as a medical sciences graduate but more importantly as a chronic pelvic pain patient myself I would urge caution. I know for many of us that have failed treatment after treatment it’s all too tempting to jump on the ‘newest’ treatments that emerge but I would ask you to ask yourself and your specialist important questions when going for consultations with specialists

1) What level of expertise does this specialist have both with stem cells specifically AND it’s applications to pelvic pain - there is a huge difference between undertaking a PhD on the subject and someone who may have studied for a postgrad certificate/diploma/attended a day conference.

2) Alongside this who is carrying out the therapy - specialist nurse or fully qualified medical doctor?

3) What sort of results have been achieved with patients so far with chronic pelvic pain and can you talk to these patients to verify this?

4) What aftercare package is provided and what treatment including supportive measures are used if complications arise

These are the sort of questions I’d like patients (I always ask myself these) to always ask when speaking to healthcare providers whether on the NHS/state funded or private healthcare to help prevent treatments being undertaken that are potentially harmful or simply a waste of time. Also to help manage expectations. I’m sure there will be others on here who may be able to provide their own experience. I hope this helps and keep us updated on any plans or treatment outcomes both good and bad if you decide to go ahead.

Thank you Alaine. Your comments are timely and wise. I’ve been keeping up with the journeys of women on the PN support sites on facebook. Seems to have worked for some but not for others. Can you tell me......what is the difference between just stem cells and the Rheo allograft amniotic fluid treatment? Thanks Alaine

Hi Chica1943,

I haven’t forgotten you. I’ve been to a meeting in Europe last week and have had a few hospital appts this week. I’m still looking into it so I can hopefully give you an answer that is accurate 😊

I had the amniotic graph injection. The RHEO injections and Botox out in Tennessee. So did my friend Anne. We are no better. We both had them done in December. All I can say is we are both still suffering. I hope that helps you. But remember everyone is different in what works for them. It didn’t work for myself and my friend Anne. I may have had a few weeks with some relief but not full relief. You have to make your own decisions though. Yes it’s still in the experimental stages. I was told that I needed another injection. I’m still debating if I’m going to do it. Hope that helps. Deb.
