Hi, I'm 40 and had endometriosis for 15 yrs, I am used to pelvic pain, but recently I have had a lot of lower back pain. I can not sit on my bottom as I suffer from pain in my coccyx. The pain radiates up my sacroilieac joint and I I have low grade stomache cramps, like period pain. GPS sent me to physio, who said it's because I have had back problem on and off for 18yrs. I haven't had the back problem for 18months and my symptoms are new. Anyone have any ideas or experienced anything similar?

I have problems in the area as well. These symptoms for me are just a part of other symptoms. Have you had an MRI done recently? Any problems with your hips?

Hi evedalllas,

I'm sorry to hear of your pain. Coccyx pain can be very dibilatating and the first thing you must do is to rest it. Try not to sit, try a coccyx cushion for when u must sit. I was told to lie only flat on my back with knees bent and pillow under or on side with a pillow between legs. Don't sit sideways on one bum cheek as it twists the pelvis and causes muscle problems. I don't know where u live but I'm in uk and have been seeing a certain chiropractor who manipulates it to regain its mobility. This has been successful but am still left with lower back and sacroiliac pain. I thought it would be well on the way now but it isn't muscle/nerve wise. Iv had it 2yrs this month. Stress also plays a big part in pelvic pain / coccyx. I try to swim, walk and Pilates to keep my spine mobile. I also take medication due to nerve involvement. All added together gives a bit of respite . I hope you recover soon.

Have either of you tried PT for pelvic and tailbone pain. A therapist that specializes in pelvic floor issues? It might really help. It has for me.

Hi bpthomas 59,

I have been having pelvic floor therapy in a London clinic for a year now. I travel from north west England every two weeks to have treatment. It was combined with coccyx manipulations and chiropractic adjustments on sacroiliac joints but now I only have p f therapy. It is working somewhat but slow progress. I think it is the mainstay treatment of coccyx and pelvic floor dysfunction.

Hi thanks for your replies, I don't think I have a problem with my hips although it does radiate out that way some times but not consistently. My pt was little help and gave me exercises that do nothing for my problem as she ignored my coccyx pain and said my sacroileac joint is stable. The pain in my coccyx is there every time I sit or lie with any pressure on it. The discomfort in my sacroileac joint is there all the time, it burns and is itchy this increases when I sit. I have some period type cramping and pain to my left lower quadrant of my abdomen, I think I need a MRI scan but was wondering what people who have had similar issues were diagnosed with? I've looked up my symptoms (good old google dr:) and have fit every thing from bowel cancer, fibroids, pelvic floor dysfunction to sacroilieac joint dysfunction and half a dozen other things. I've booked a GP appointment again as next pt is end of the month. Really starting to worry.

Hi, I have never had a diagnosis. Iv had a MRI scan showed nothing. I had a clear x Ray but the chiro found my coccyx was angled and stiff . Hence causing the pain when I sat. I have s I joint pain, and pelvic pain . I am going to see dr demello at Manchester pain clinic next week. It's a difficult thing to pinpoint with pelvic pain. You just have to keep chipping away at it with the help of your gp, Physio, exercise etc. I hope you find help and your diagnosis soon.

There is a book by Peter Dornan (Australian rugby team physio) which focusses on the SI joint being the CAUSE of pelvic pain. Pricey at £35, but if you have SI stiffness it might be worth reading.
