Bile

I have a very dry mouth but for quite a while now (months) I get like a thick bile in the back of my throat which starts me coughing, choking, then can nearly be sick (its completely different from acid reflux). Just wondered if anyone else had anything like this as to whether it might have some relation to the Urso.

Dry mouth and eyes can be another autoimune disorder called Sjogren's Syndrome. Not sure how bile would get in your throat. With PBC the bile the liver makes gets stuck in the liver because the bile ducts are distroyed and the bile that does get through gets stored in the gullblader until you eat and then it is released into the small intestins.

I always thought the bile that is stored in the gallbladder goes directly into the stomach to help with fatty foods (this could explain how the bile ends up in the stomach and consequently in your throat like reflux) However if you do not have a gallbladder the bile goes directly into your small intestines? Maybe someone can clarify this for me? X

Hi yes I do have Sjorgens and do experience the throat problems you mention. I cant imagine its related to the Urso though. My throat is constantly dry and I also can have problems with swallowing. I do also have the choking and feeling I cant clear my throat and that it is blocked

I don't think for a minute it is due to URSO with regards a feeling of bile rising up into the throat.

I remember from pregnancy when I spent about 4mths each time (2 births) in the earlier stages feeling and being sick, the one where I was sick first thing in the morning was actually bile I was informed as I was being sick on an empty stomach. It's not a nice feeling at all and I've been fortunate (so far that is, you never know.....) that I've not suffered more than a bit of heartburn and tummy bloating in the first few mths of taking URSO of which that all settled.

I know you can get a dry mouth at times of stress or nervousness, it's due to the adrenaline apparently. I do get a dry mouth at times in these situations (ie job interviews are one eg) but add that on top of someone with Sjorgens then expect it feels even worse. Have you tried maybe sucking the odd mint at these times? Don't know if it will help but worth a try.

Lol yes to sucking the odd mint. To tell the truth I am always sucking something. I go through packets and packets a day. Its getting ridiculous. I also have a saliva spray which I use. Even when I am sucking something I can still start coughing/choking. Was just wondering about with having the extra bile whether it was backing up. Guess I will have to mention it to the GP when I next go again.

yes, i do the choking, can't swallow thing --- once in a while i get the acidy- bile cough that wakes me if (if i'm lucky enuf to sleep)-- and i hate that --

Hi Everyone, years ago I was started on Nexium for reflux. I had told a PA it seemed as if I tasted bile for it was bitter. She said it is bile.

I take Omeprazole and gaviscon advance for acid reflux as I have a hytus hernia but this is different. Its just like thick saliva in my throat.

I take Omeprazole for reflux, it started the year before my diagnosis so not related to the URSO. It got so bad I couldnt bend forward without something coming up; I was scoped and everything looked ok - it was only in the following year with my diagnosis it was put down to PBC.

In the news 2016, omeprazole ,etal, was scientifically proved to increase the likelihood of dementia by 44%!
