Hello, everyone. I had my Ultrasound last week, My CBD diameter is prominent
measuring 12.1 cm. Is this finding worrying?
Also my weight is 50 kilos taking 250mg of Urso 3 times a day equivalent to 750 mg. for so many years, my specialist reduced my Urso to 500mg a day, told me my liver is ok. Is 500 enough for my weight? Thanks for any opinion, suggestion. Take care, be well.

Hi, I have had a similar issue. A few years ago my doctor was worried my bile duct was expanding too much so they did an ultrasound down the throat kind of thing and they said that while it was expanded it was not all that bad. I think they said it was a nine but I was okay. I has had numerous ultrasounds since (just the regular ones) and it sometimes they say it’s an 8, once they said it’s a 7 which is normalish so, I am not too sure. I thought I should have gotten a few brownie points for that because it was better but nobody said a word about it. So, if they are really worried about it they can go in and take a look and put a stint in if they need too. I don’t know if bile ducts fluctuate or what. I have not heard anyone address that issue.
Hi, your reply has given me comfort although fear and anxiety is taking over me. I searched and learned that the normal CBD measures 11mm and mine is 12.1 cm. which is 121mm. It's so difficult to get an appointment with my gastro, every 6 months. but opinions in this group is really comforting. Always trying to be positive and praying for a good life ahead of us.
For PBC 750mg of Urso looks like correct dose for body weight of 50kg.
In Prof Jones recent book he suggests taking all Urso at bedtime. I recently saw a Polish consultant and she was surprised that here in UK the dosage is split. They always prescribe it taken all at once. I think it is because originally Urso was developed as a treatment for gall stones not PBC.
HI, thanks for your reply, as we all know, 15mg of Urso X body weight is the correct dosage. I was taking 3 of the 250mg equals 750 taken at night. Fine with this for so many years. I need to question my specialist for the reduction to 500 mg. Be well.
Not sure if my experience is much help but last year mine was seen to be enlarged but I don’t know the measurements. However, it was larger than previously measured. My consultant wasn’t that concerned but thought it might have been a gall stone blocking the duct so did follow-up MRI .
Which showed it was normal, I questioned it as you do and she said sometimes the angle of the ultrasound probe can skew the result and that having the pictures and measurements from MRI is more accurate. Hopefully they offered you a follow-up to have a better look, if you can’t call to speak to your gastro team, have a word with your primary care doctor they will be able to help with follow-up if they think it’s necessary.
Hi, thanks for your reply. Likewise, my consultant didn't seem worried about my bile duct measurement. He just said your liver is ok. I'm skeptical about it. The ultrasound result said it could be related to status post cholecystectomy but other exams within normal limits. Take care.
The PBC Foundation have a very useful helpline, if you email them they can always talk to you via WhatsApp. If you are not already a member it is free to join.
The usual weight to dose is printed on the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) and will, I believe, show a range of 13-16 mgs per kilo. The PIL in my next box of URSO shows a body weight between 47-62 kilos is 3X250mg capsules a day to be spread across the day for the first three months thereinafter to be taken once a day in the evening.
The PBC Foundation produced a weight to dose visual calculator. Here is the link
After the initial 3 months while my body adjusted to taking URSO 3 times a day I was able to take all my medication at the same time. For me I like to take it with my evening meal to avoid the URSO repeating on me.
I have no experience of CBD to share but I hope your primary carer can discuss this with you to reduce your concerns.
Thanks for replying and for the info. I've been a member since diagnosis, 2013, We know the correct dose for our condition is based on our body weight. Just so surprised and worried about the change of my dosage from my specialist, that's why I turned here for support again. The support group as ever. I copied the link you gave me as a permanent guide and handy reference.. Wish you well.
The correct dose for your weight is between 650 - 750mgs/day. I would question him lowering the dose since your iiver is 'fine'. I would hope that the reason it's fine is that the Urso at the correct dose is working. It is always just based on your weight - never your lab results or your symptoms. Glad you are at least questioning it - you are right to do so.
Appreciate so much your response regarding my concern. It's a worry that my condition might get worst if I'm not on the correct dosage. So true that my condition is fine because of the correct dosage, based on my body weight. I feel stronger and at ease now after getting your response. Thank you, God bless.
I know it can sometimes be hard to question or suggest to your doctor but we all have to learn to advocate for ourselves. A doctor who truly cares should welcome any suggestions or questions from their patients. Let me know what he says. I truly hope he knows how to take care of someone with PBC - believe me, so many do not and won't admit it.
Yes, always advocate for yourself. If I have a question, I first tell my hep I am not questioning his knowledge, but from a patient’s perspective this is my question. It makes for a smooth conversation.
I’ve just had a mri to and was told that I had a common bile duct measuring 12mm , I had the scan in may and I’ve only got the results because the consultant forgot to send me the results, on the letter it says i need to be reviewed, and doesn’t explain anything else, so I came on here to see if I could find anything
