What is the brand name of your URSO if you had the itch upon starting and how is your prescription for it written.

I can't help wondering what others are on for PBC medication-wise with regards to the URSO. I have the URDOX brand and my GP gives me a prescription with just Ursodeoxycholic Acid and the mgs/tabs per day.

Have heard such a thing as generic drugs but not fully sure what that means and if so, are there any for URSO?

I've still got the itch which is cyclical in that it normally occurs in the evening. Some nights I do get a respite from the itch but know some of you out there the itch stopped on using URSO so I wondered if it could perhaps be down to different brand names.

I know the one I have, there is no mention whatsoever in the leaflet the tablets are for PBC, just gallstones so wondered what others (some of you have mentioned taking Ursofalk) had on their drug info leaflets.

Hi,

I'm on URSOFALK and Ursodeoxycholic Acid is written on my prescription. The brand names are chosen by your chemist. I guess it could be what is available for your area. I still get the itch sometimes but I have found out chocolate makes it worse :-(

I take Sertraline for the itch prescribed by my consultant. Which helps a bit. There are other medications you can take for the itch. Maybe a chat with your consultant will help.

Thanks for the reply.

I did a bit of net snooping and have discovered that ursodeoxycholic acid appears to be the generic but URDOX and I expect URSOFALK are the actual brand names.

Some nights the itch drives me a bit mad especially when I can't sleep but on the whole it is quite tolerable at present and much better than before I was diagnosed 2010.

For now I don't want to take any other medications apart from what I am supposed to have for the PBC, the URSO.

I did read which may be the reason why I get URDOX is due to the mgs as URDOX comes in 300mgs of which I take 600mgs per day.

Hi peridot

Sometimes I have wondered about brand names. I'm on 250mg x 4 a day, i've always been on a high dose. I've never question it and I feel fine taking that much.

Hi peridot, I am on the same doze as yourself so we must be about the same height and weight as this is what they use to calculate the dozage so it just means that anyone smaller and thinner or even taller and fatter than us will be on a different doze. x

You don't have to accept the generic drugs from your GP I have the Ursofalk ( DR Falk) brand BTW and I always get them from the same place, not sure if it makes any difference though.

I have heard others talking about the different brands and which one suits them the best. From what I understood from the mails each company uses their own fillers to go with the ursodeoxycholic acid which might make them a bit cheaper to produce than another brand. So if you find one brand dosent suit you it could be down to the fillers and its worth trying another brand.

I take Questran for the itch.

I take URDOX, and I have 300mg x 2 a day. That is what my prescription has always been. Itching is not a major problem for me and it cetainly improved my bloods, to the extent that my consultant said, that I have the best results he have ever seen on URSO! I guess the only reason for swapping is if they dont suit you.

Hi there I take ursofalk but it has the full name written on my prescription. My understanding is that this is prescribed on diagnosis to improve liver function and sometimes but not always it helps the itch, guess I'm lucky cause mine went instantly. It may be worth checking your dosage,as it is prescribed on weight so if you gain weight the dose may need tweaking

Hi Peridot

I take UrsoFalk - I itched tremendously the first time I began taking three tablets a day, so started again taking one tablet a day for the first week, then 2 for the next week, then 3 tablets. This has made no difference. I itch all day and all night and bleed from various parts of my body all the time where I have scratched so much, even though I've cut my nails very short. The other aspect is that I can't sleep usually for two nights and, by the third night I am so tired, I sleep for a couple of hours, then wake up, then sleep for a few more hours. So most of the time I'm feeling very tired.
