Hi everyone, hope you are all keeping well. Just a quick question, is it safe to take paracetamol for knee pain? Have had trouble with my knees for a few months now. I was dx with PBC earlier this year and take urso. Thanks

Hi,

I was advised not to take paracetamol and anti-inflammatory pain relief. Best to consult with doctor.

I was allowed paracetamol but nothing else for a serious back problem. As always check with your doctor in case there is a reason why you shouldn`t .

When I had a sports injury, I checked with my hepatologist & he told me ibuprofen is okay. His exact words were “a little ibuprofen here & there is okay.”

Best to check with your own doctor as each situation is unique.

I was told by consultant that the recommended dose of paracetmol (tylenol), is better taken than suffering pain that otherwise causes you immobility. Do you know what causes your knee pain? ButterflyEi mentioned in a reply to someone with joint pain that tomatoes, among other acid foods, can cause it. I stopped eating tomatoes, (i love them and could eat every day) and my knee pain has stopped.

Thank you all for your replies. I do eat tomatoes, will stop for a while and see what happens.

I hope it makes a difference for you too. I stopped having canned tomatoes and tomato soup as well, no just fresh ones.

I would ask to have your vitamin and mineral levels checked, especially Vit D and calcium. PBC can cause a drop in vit D as the liver is not able to produce the items to help absorb it, and this then results in a decrease in the body's absorption of Calcium … so that joint/bone problems can result. A lot of people, especially women - and esp post-menopause - end up with joint problems, even just aches and pains - it is one of the more common symptoms of PBC after itching.

My consultant told me 1 500mg of paracetamol per day But if you go to your GP they will prescribe voltrol which works brilliantly for me on my knee.

Voltarol is truly a miracle!

I swear by that stuff. I have Fibromyalgia, along with several other spinal issues, so at times I'm practically bathing in it, it gives such relief.
