Had a tooth pulled and was given clyndamycin for infection. Was wondering if that antibiotic is too strong for the liver?

I was advised by hepatologist two weeks ago that the risk of infection for me with reduced immunity was greater than the risk of potential harm from the antibiotic. I took the course, one week, no side effects, took it with meals, drank a little more water than usual. I was nervous about taking it without double checking, that's how I came to have the hep opinion on it.

Ok thanks its just hard sometimes figuring out whats the best thing to do.Feel a little dizzy from antibiotics but sure that will pass.

I had Amoxyl in November. Took first dose 10pm, and when I woke next morning, fell back in bed. The loss of balance continued for a week after I finished the course. Remember to stand slowly from seated or lying down, raising your head slowly and last of all. You'll have read the patient info leaflet, and you will know if you are having a side effect that you can continue with, or if you are having an allergic reaction which means you should stop taking them. I do sympathise. I felt rubbish all the while taking them, part anxiety, part gastric disturbance, tearful and low at end of week. They are powerful drugs but really important we take as and when prescribed. Best wishes. Hope you feel better soon.

see what ninjagirlwebb says, really good advice to take probiotics to restore gut flora, also to combat the blues which a course of antibiotics can bring on.

Remember to take some probiotics to replenish your gut bacteria. Check with pharmacist how to space out the antibiotics & probiotics so that they are effective. My PCP told me to do this while on antibiotics.

It used to be the advice when finishing antibiotics were to restore probiotics. A friend told me last week to take them throughout the course. I didn't do the "throughout" way because the gut upset was too much without adding to it. So I finished a course on Tuesday and haven't begun to take the probio's because they also give me a hard time and can't tolerate more tummy events yet. Is ther a reason that you know why it's better to take throughout than after?

No other reason than that is what my doctor suggested to me. In the past, no other doctors ever suggested it before.

Thanks for reply Hayley. It's easy for me to to do nothing when there's confilcting advice. I like when doctors tell me "Why" even though I forget to ask. But I must do something: antibiotics seem to have left me with the blues, and I read on a reliable source that restored gut flora can also improve this.

One of my friends is a health coach & she also told me through out. Either way, you need to replenish good bacteria after antibiotics.

Additionally it is good practice to have probiotic foods daily. I usually have yogurt & kombucha.

in reply to ninjagirlwebb

Thanks for that. I'm going to do it throughout if ever I need them again. Is that a good combo, yoghurt, and kombucha? I think you make kombucha? I'm not so energetic. Will see if I can get some at health food store.

The only antibiotic I would advise people not to take is Nitrofurantoin as that is what the hepatologist thought had set off my PBC. It is known to upset the liver.

For dental, I am always prescribed Amoxicillin. Tolerated fine. You can ask your doctor, if you can take for 2-3 days instead of a whole week.

Good luck!

Omg I thought I was just crazy and it was all in my head about antibiotics I have PBC mom had PBC and my moms mom also had PBC mom passes at 43 grandma at 51. Now I’m 45 but I’ve been on antibiotics for so long due to UTIs and every time I get knocked down feel worse then before. But I go to ER because of so much belly pains the drs call me a frequent flyer gets my blood boiling I’d wish PBC on nobody because so many drs are unsure of this inheritance... I’m tired of being sick.. any advice from anyone?

Sorry, but I have no advice. I do, however, understand what you're going through. I also have PBC, plus recurring UTI's. Being put on antibiotics each time is not healthy for the PBC liver or for the intestinal tract, either. The urologist is saying she now wants to put me on low-dose Macrobid/furantoin for long term, because that's the "prescribed" therapy to stop UTI's from happening. I told her she and I needed to confer with my liver specialist first. I don't think my hep. will say that's a good idea for me. But the problem remains of how to stop my getting WAY too many UTI's. I'm hoping someone on this site might have found a non-antibiotic solution and will share. My primary care wants to put me on bio-identical estrogen; says this can lessen the occurrence. Anyone else heard this?

I’ve been diagnosed with celiac, IBS,Gerd,Haitial hernia, divercolotitus, PBC, is all of this because of the PBC?

I preface this by saying i’m allergic to penacillin and several of its derivatives. Five yrs ago, I took a course of clyndamycin for a distracted tooth and my system was unable to tolerate the antibiotic. I contracted c-diff - an infection that destroys both good and bad bacteria in the body and as a result, spent 8 days hospitalized in isolation, IV therapy of antibiotics and fluids and 6 mos recuperation. I’m now high risks for infections. I’ve learned to make sure all my doctors know that I have PBC along with other comorbid conditions, have had c-diff twice, gone into septic shock twice and can’t tolerate just any antibiotics. If doctors have any doubts, I have them consult with my gastro and pay close attention to how my body reacts.
