I had always thought that my fluctuating LFT’s were because of lipitor which was why It took a while for me to be diagnosed with pbc. I was off the meds for a while & then we knew it wasn’t the meds.
ninjagirl Webb...my Internist thought it was maybe my simvastatin. Stopped & retested. That’s when he got busy with all other tests & PBC was the culprit.
I think if it weren't for the fact we were on statins, we would have been diagnosed earlier. Pretty sure I had pbc a few years or more before diagnosis.
Thank you for your answer. You and gwillistexas have had this situation before diagnosis. I have this situation now after 1,5 years taking URSO. Before diagnosis only
GGT was high. ALT and AST perfectly normal.
If you are on URSO what are actually these measurements?
Urso makes the ggt, LFT’s normal. It really is a possibility that the statins are causing the elevation for you. It is a known occurrence in non pbc population that statins can cause elevated LFT’s which is why statin users are monitored in case that happens.
Yes, when I was first put on simvastatin, I emphasized my concerns about the liver. He told me if enzymes were to become elevated they would stop statin & if that is causing it, they drop back to normal. So I guess that’s where they start if they become elevated. 😊
It’s so confusing my GP told me of all the meds I take statins were the things that could make things worse for my liver. My Hep tells me that the affect is minimal. Have any of you who have given the statins a break noticed any difference in your LFT tests
My hep said it was safe to be on statins to control the cholesterol. But it is true that statins are hard on the liver. Think doctors look at the pros vs the cons & in this situation, we need to control the cholesterol. Not everyone will have high lft’s due to statins.
My hep suggested for me to go back on statins. I consulted with my primary who is also a GI & he sent me to the cardiologist for a consult. She said if the hep said it was okay then she would recommend the statins.
I have almost same like your results...it is due to pbc overlap with aih in my case..my dr doesn’t want any other medicine until my alt goes very high..
