Buzzing in my ears that is worse at night...

Does anyone else have this? Is it from the toxins building up during the day and going to your brain?

Hi AuntDeeDee, yes I get that but not all the time. A few days or hours and it’s bad at night, but I think it’s usually associated with fatigue or doing more than I should in one day. Also when travelling for long hours. Get well soon

Thank you! Mine seems to get worse especially because I smoke and do so more at night. The only stress I really have is this liver disease which is scary especially at night when I swell up. I was wondering if it had something to do with the toxins going to your brain and turning into ammonia. There is like swelling or pressure in my head more at night and I get slight headaches from it too. Im sure quitting smoking would help tremendously because it causes more inflammation. I am on a cirrhosis diet and exercise and stick to it religiously because if I eat one little thing wrong I swell up which scares me to death. Had to go to the ER with ascites 2 weeks ago and couldnt breathe. One of the scariest things I have ever been through.

Sorry to learn that you got to this stage but I don’t believe your smoking going to help you. Please be kind to yourself and go visit a doctor or talk to a friend who’s got a sound advice on how to 🛑. Best of luck. Hopping to hear better news about you.

Thank you Evaibrahim, smoking is the only thing really that has been hard to quit but I have cut down to close to half a pack in the last mth on most days from a pack a day. I guess once you have ascites it is a pretty bad sign? I havent had to be drained yet but Im on laxis and low sodium, low potassium, high protein diet and I exercise 30 mins daily. The dr still thinks it is fatty liver disease but I have had two positive ana's, one positive ama m2 and a weak positive fas-actin. I go next week to have a liver ct with contrast so they can see what is going on. Very happy he put off the biopsy a little longer...it sounds painful.

Biopsy is not painful if they do the one that puts you totally under anesthesia. Don’t worry should it come to that.

Glad to see someone mention noise. Few months ago I noticed a very slight noise similar to a very low sound of the a/c running. My sinuses are bad so I thought that could be the cause. Never had a buzz though. Hope they figure it out for you. I know it drives you crazy. There is also tinnitus which is harmless I think.

Ha-ha, I had buzzing and ringing in my ears for years. It's called tinnitus. In my case, it is certainly not connected to PBC or urso. Most of the time I don't even notice. But, if it is really quiet in the room, then, I do. This is not a huge thing, once you get used to it. William Shatner has it too. :)

Good luck!

Yeah I know about tinnitus but mine didnt start until my liver got worse. I have been reading up on it and found that the toxins can get into your inner ear and damage it.

Dear AuntDeeDee, I hope it's not the case. Sometimes these things happen, but, then they go away. You should still check yourself for tinnitus. It could be a coincidence, even though you think it's not. What stage of PBC are you?

I suffer with tinnitus as did my mother who did not have PBC but other autoimmune problems. There is currently no cure however I find that low background noise like the radio is helpful.

I've experienced the buzzing for 3 yrs straight now. Have had every test done by specialist, he said it is caused by crystals in drums. IDK, what it is but it is very annoying. There are time when I can not hear anything, night time it does seem worse. Medications can contribute to this as side effects but it isn't the actual reason. I have a host of autoimmune diseases. Take many medications and have decided this is just one thing I am going to live with. It never goes away, sometimes it can be softer. The worst is when I'm attending any type of event where it is loud, a musical or large group of people. Even when family visit, I sometimes remove myself for a few minutes aas my head will hurt so that I can't take it any longer.

I have the buzzing or ears ringing too. It comes and goes.. Years ago it was worse and I was tested but never got an answer then few years later started hearing about tinnitus but had never been told I had it... but it is getting worse again and at night when it's not noisy. Also, hear heartbeat thumping in my ear often.

As mt Dr. says, if it is not seriously affecting your life quality, be thankful! I have a noise, ringing, comes and goes, my hearing is poor, in a busy place I struggle to get into conversations with multiple people (not too bad on one to one) ...time to get my hearing aid I think....

Hi..I also have a lot of buzzing and ringing in my ears...I was shown how to stop it for a few seconds which does help to relax you and its so quiet! Basically you put your palms over your ears quite tightly, put your fingers to back of lower head and flick the first and sexond fingers( from the thumb) together quite hard..It will sound loud..I dont touch the back of my head but some do. I dont believe it is anything to do with the liver though. Good luck

I saw that too online and have done it a few times. It quiets it for a few mins but doesnt last long

Good morning everyone! I have done alot of research on this and from what I gather the toxins can damage your inner ear causing the ringing or buzzing. The Chinese have also found the connection between a damaged liver and tinnitus. Look at how many things a damaged liver does to our bodies anyway so it isnt hard to think that could be true.

Interesting because I have no liver damage, or didn’t last September. Thanks for the info. I’ll put it on my list of questions.

I have severe tinnitus, it’s very pervasive in my frontal lobe and I hear Morse code on my right ear.

Sounds like tinnitus. I have pulsitile tinnitus which is the sound of my heartbeat in the ear both sides had it most of my life. No cure but low background noise helps mask it.

Have you had your hearing checked, there are a number of ear diseases that have tinnitus as a symptom you should get further evaluation before assuming it’s toxins.

I say this as a sufferer of vertigo and tinnitus the ringing in one ear, that was caused by a choleasteatoma that needed removing. There is also an autoimmune inner ear disease.

Yeah I have read about the autoimmune response mistaking your eardrums as foreign invaders.
