Have been given a 14 day course of the steroid prednisolone for another condition. Wondered if this is safe to take with PBC?

I have been taking prednisolone for nearly 11 years as part of my medication after a liver transplant caused by PBC. 8 years ago I was diagnosed with recurrent PBC, which sometimes happens after a transplant, and am still taking steroids. Am wondering whether this is the reason that the PBC hasn't progressed at all.

Hi, I have been taking Prednisolone since July, due to suspected RA on top of PBC which I had for at least 8 years. The doctor had to reduced the dosage as it gave me water retention which caused my legs to swell up massively and I kept having these painful kind of cramps/spasms on my legs too many times a day. I am on a minimum dosage now but I am not seeing huge improvement on the other condition. My liver results seems to be same and I haven't had any other symptoms related to PBC. I hope this helps you. xx

Hi I have been on Prednisolone for the second time large dosage on a reducing scale, this is for Giant cell syndrome ( Temperal Arteritis) and PMR. My bloods are all within PBC range. Hope all goes well with you. x

Hello jrobertson1.

21 years ago prednisolone was the norm for someone struggling with asthma, a short course like you are taking currently. My former late husband used to have to take this steroid for asthma.

I expect PBC can feel better taking this steroid short-term, it is anti-inflammatory so any current liver inflammation should temporarily benefit.

Thanks for all replies to this. Mind at rest now and will take the course prescribed.

Should be fine, but in general you should adhere to a couple of hard and fast rules if diagnosed with any progressive disease process. Make sure the prescribing physician is aware of your condition (and understands what it is), and clear any new meds with whoever monitors your PBC. A quick message left with the doctor's staff should do the trick. Best of luck!

Taking prednisone now along with azathioprine for AIH and the Ursodiol for PBC. No problems except the full moon face from the prednisone. It did keep me awake at night for the first week or so.

Hi I have AIH/PBC overlap and I have been taking prednisolone for almost three years now. I am currently on 5 mg as a maintainance dose. My consultant said that my meds are doing a good job and my bloods keep coming back as normal, so yes it is safe to take prednisolone with PBC, and it may help with some of your symptoms.
