Hi my fellow pbcers as I'm still so new to this I wanted to ask do any of the ladies notice their symptoms get worse around the time of their periods?

Periods and PBC
Hello Sharilee,
Yes my symptoms of fatigue and aching definitely got worse around my period, suggests hormones are involved somehow but don't know how.I am now past that age so don't have that anymore although still have symptoms and feel over time they have got worse, now feel weaker but I now have cirrhosis so I suppose that's to be expected.
Best wishes to you.Jane.
Could be, in general I've felt that over the years (I'm 47 years old) I feel worse the weeks after ovulation till period. But I never spoke my Gp about it. Another thing that happened after starting Ursofalk is that I start having little bloodloss about a week before my period really starts and then period itself takes only 2 days with very little blood too. Very different then it used to be.
I have found the day or two before my period I am so tired, and most likely due to my age and stress more than anything, my periods have been un-regular.
Yes! A couple days before and during my itching is worse! That's the one I notice most. I heard the estrogen causes it.
O yes, my symptoms get worse just before and during my period. I've been wondering if perhaps the uterus gets a bit swollen and presses on an already strained digestive apparatus. I also get more tired and feel sick and nauseous.
Not a pleasant condition this...

I can't find the link to refresh my memory and check the exact details of the research studies that have already been done, but there is some link between oestrogen and PBC. Which may be part of explaining why so many more women get the condition than men. However, I think there's much further to go yet.
Thanks ladies good to hear I'm not alone! The joys of PBC... I'm not long after being on the Urso so still need to find out that my body is responding to the medication ok but fingers crossed. I'm 30 and wondered do the symptoms worsen quickly? At the minute I'm not too bad (apart from during my period) x
I found the symptoms of pbc worsened initially when I started Urso, but they aren't as bad now...the first few months were the worst. Now after a year I don't get too much itching, just usually when I'm over tired, but I think everyone is different. What I would say is that the urso has brought my lfts down to normal levels now, so it is is worth it.
Best wishes
Hi, yes...I find I'm more tired around my period and usually when I'm more tired I itch more and therefore get more tired too. I'm also finding my period symptoms are worse...achy tummy, headache, grumpy...usual story! These increased symptoms might be down to the fact I'm starting to go through the menopause. Great being a woman isn't it??
