Xanthelasma and PBC

Anyone else have Xanthelasma around their eyes? I had noticed these develop last summer out of nowhere (pre diagnosis) and my cholesterol levels are perfect. It’s quiet frustrating trying to cover them up and they stick out like a sore thumb. Looking for ways to treat them other than Sx. Any information would be helpful!

Thank you,

Melissa

I believe your doctor can remove them by freezing. I had just one and picked at it until it went - a bit painful and probably not to be recommended if yours a large.

There are one or two web site one of which is WebMD which gives a fairly good idea of what can be done.

Thanks for the reply!

Mine are under the skin and not raised as of yet. I will look at the link you posted😊

Hi,

I had one, sticking out & the size of a small pea on my eyelid and had it very, very easily removed. She did a miniscule cut and the lump popped out. Healed like magic. I have the flat trace of it on the surface of the skin (which makes me think that eventually it might grow back) along with a couple of other flat ones. Personally I wouldn't touch or worry about the flat ones.

It's not as rare as that article would have you believe. I have normal cholesterol and the lump appeared very quickly - probably wasn't, but it felt like overnight and you look in the mirror and say where the hell did that come from!

Be very careful with anything in the eye area - absolutely do not want infections close to the eye.

I have no knowledge on the ones y’all are speaking of, but have read that what we call cholesterol bumps usually do not appear around the eyes.

I too have normal cholesterol levels. The hepatologist told me that it is not the same type of cholesterol that causes the xanthelasmas. I had scraped mine away with the bevel of a needle but they came back. Best to have them removed by laser therapy.

Just received a referral to see a cosmetic ophthalmologist. Fingers crossed they can do something.

This is interesting😀 I’ve got a lot of them all around my eyes, they are magnified because I now wear glasses and it is unsightly. I had no idea they could be removed, I must have in excess of 30

Might be worth me mentioning them at my next appointment.

Thinking about it now, when they first began to appear a few years ago I did have some removed using the RVT method but it didn’t really work, after the little scar healed they just came back. It was done by a beauty therapist so maybe the medical route is more successful.
