I've been taking the Urso for 4 days, I've had a terrible headache all 4 days. I've taken a few doses of ibuprofen to try to manage it. I've also had stomach cramps, diarrhea, a low grade fever, back and neck pain. Can anyone tell me if these symptoms will let up or is this permanent?

Urso side effects
Hi there. Sorry to hear you're not feeling good. Are you taking the dose all at one time? I believe for the first few months you should spread it out throughout the day. Then build up to taking it all in one go. I'm not aware of anyone having similar symptoms. I don't remember seeing it on here but let's wait & see what people say. You should probably check with your doc in case it's something unrelated. Also - be careful with the Ibuprofen. It's not recommended for anyone with liver issues. I believe occasional paracetamol is best but again you should run this by your doc too.
Hi jaksgirl
I have been taking Urso since July. When I started on it I did feel really unwell, but I also think I was quite run down. In fact I was so worried about how I felt that I returned to my Gps on
around the fourth day. I do remember having a strange headache which in my case lasted a few weeks. I don't like taking medication so I think I was over sensitive to anything pbc or maybe not pbc related that was happening in my body. I also think the stress of coming to terms with my diagnosis excaberated how I was feeling.
After taking it for about a month I started to feel a bit better. Maybe it was just that my body had started to get familiar with it. I am now beginning to feel a bit more like my old self. I know I was reassured recently by someone who posted on the site that they had been on Urso for 2 months and they had felt generally unwell, but it had helped with their blood results so they were intending to try to stick with it.
Perhaps as suggested by LisaC22 you should get some advice fron your Gp about ways of gradually introducing the Urso and also about the symptoms you have mentioned. Just to rule out the possibility of other things.
Take care and if you can, take some time out to adjust to managing on the Urso. Be kind to yourself.
No doubt lots of people here will let you know about their experience and will have some really good advice.
Hope you soon feel better x
Thank you for your replies, I've been off work for about 6 weeks. I've started adjusting to the PBC diagnosis, grateful there was an answer to my beyond extreme fatigue. I'm hoping to return to work in the next week, unfortunately my job has been driving 10-14 hrs a day, 5 days a week. Falling asleep at the wheel was happening frequently, so it's doubtful I'll be able to continue that job. My employer is searching within the company for a less stressful position, also closer to 40 hrs. I'm hopeful that my body will adapt to the Urso and I can start feeling more like myself again. I'm not expecting miracles, but praying for average at least.
One other thing , make sure you take urso with or just after food, this made all the difference to me with spreading the dosage over the day , which I still do as I find it suits me better.
When I first started on urso i built up to the full dosage over a few weeks due to diarrhoea, this may be something you could discuss with your Doctor if you think it's due to side affects. Never heard of pain and low grade fever being a side affect so it may be worth checking this out with your doctor.
I dreaded taking urso and put it off for the 1st few months because of the side effects but when I did start it I took half dose for the first 3/4 weeks then went up to the full dose but I still take half in the morning after food and half at bedtime and I find this helped a lot, I think I'm one of the lucky ones as I started to feel a lot better within a short while so just keep trying and playing around with when it's best to take them for you
Hi I have also just been diagnosed and am on my first week of URSO and have had headaches which start about a hour after taking it and also have developed diarrhoea neither of which I had before starting the URSO. I feel a bit out of it after taking it which is so not like me. I am only on 300mg twice a day. Worried about stopping but hope this improves.
Hi jaksgirl..I have had PBC for 14 yrs and take 250mg x 3 of Urso I take all 3 just after breakfast you will feel better taking the pills with food. Don't worry about side effects at first its only your body adjusting to new medication, stick with taking the pills as I remember it took me about 4 weeks to adjust. Please do not take any kind of ibuprofen tablets as it effects the liver, paracetamol is fine. Hope you feel better soon.
Sounds to me like you might have a virus? Some of these symptoms would be unusual with Urso, but some very common.
I struggled when I started taking it, and my consultant told me to drop to half the dose, then build slowly up to a full dose over the course of a month. Worked really well and I don't have any issues now. Worth a try?
Hang in there, going back to wrk when you've found a more suitable position will be a positive thing as being busy and with other people should help with the psychological aspects xxx
I was advised not to take ibrufen....occasionally I take paracetamol.....
I was so worried about taking Urso and about taking medication every day for the rest of my life that I put it off - for at least a year!!! Now I take all 3 tablets all together, every night before I go to bed. (As advised by my consultant). No side effects, no nothing.
I have been taking urso since June 2016. 2 in the morning 2 in the evening. When I take 2 together in the morning I get diarrhoea. I take 1 in the morning with breakfast and then the other 1 with lunch. I then take the other 2 at dinner time and this works for me. My bowel movements have been a lot better with urso. You will be taking urso for life no doubt and will have plenty of time to work out what way is best for you. 4 days isn't long and hopefully your body will adjust to the urso. Hope you feel better soon.
