Shell fish intolerance

Used to be able to eat mussells and scallops but seem to now have an intolerance to scallops? Hubbie ate from the same pack as me on 2 separate occasions. He was fine, I was really sick. Any one else now unable to eat shellfish since diagnosis?

Hello jrobertson1.

I still eat things I ate pre-diagnosis of PBC 2010. Recently I had some mussels and was fine. On a recent UK holiday had some fresh crab from the harbour, no problem. I've not encountered any intolerance to certain foods since diagnosis.

I know in the past if I've eaten anything shop prepared as fresh that day (ie roast chicken sandwich nationwide high street bakery) if anything was amiss I'd find myself being sick a few hours later (as in the case of this sandwich). I put that down to the actual food I ate. I've not had any problems like this for quite some years.

Thanks, Peridot.

Just seems odd that my husband has eaten from the same batch of scallops on 2 occasions and had no problem. I was previously fine with mussels and scallops but wary now.

Hi JRobertson1, I used to enjoy mussels, I cannot eat them any longer as like you my hubby and I have eaten the same food and I have been really sick lasting a few days!

I was told to avoid shellfish.

Hello Junolee.

Interesting as I've not been told to avoid anything and I did ask at diagnose. Apparently it is said that some things we tend to just find that we cannot seem to tolerate anymore but so far for me been fine.

Was a reason given as to why you were informed to 'avoid shellfish'. I have to say that certain seafoods aren't wholly to my liking and I wouldn't eat them frequently mind. Every now and then (ie shared some spider crab recently on holiday straight from the harbour in Wales) but I do like buying prawns.

Personally I cannot see the difference between eating shellfish and fish itself. It's been said that certain fish can be contaminated with the waters it resides in but I think everything these days has somehow been tampered with in one way or another. That's a different subject mind!

Shellfish intolerance is primarily associated with bivalve molluscs (such as mussels, clams, oysters and scallops). These shellfish are filter feeders and, therefore, accumulate toxins produced by microscopic algae, such as dinoflagellates and diatoms, and cyanobacteria. Crabs, lobster and prawns do not come in to this category neither do ordinary fish.

I will definitely avoid shellfish now. Thanks, ladies.

Never been able to eat shellfish & now no normal fish only out of a tin such as tuna or salmon.

Yes, I can no longer eat most shellfish - used to eat some every couple of days, now I get nauseous just thinking about having some. I still eat prawns but even they are beginning to taste different, so I'm thinking that I won't be able to eat them either soon. :(

By the by, my nauseous is not limited to just shellfish, I can no longer stand the smell of cooking, nor the eating, of beef or lamb.

Lost my sense of smell 14 years ago so no problem with food smells. Don't seem to be intolerant to anything else except maybe almonds but may have been a coincidence. Thanks for your reply.

I am usually fine after I have been sick a few times. If the pain is really bad and you are not vomiting I would go and get checked out.

My son developed an intolerance to oysters, I had it explained to me by an oyster farmer, how it happens they do not know and it is often incorrectly blamed on a 'bad' oyster. It is an intolerance to uncooked bi-valves, if oysters are cooked he can eat them. If mussels or scallops are not cooked thru they could trigger the same reaction. Mind you there is no fun in eating overcooked scallops!

I had fresh mussels last night, my husband ate the same, I was very sick a few hours later, while he was fine. Interested to see that this is not unusual. I've not eaten mussels for about 6 years and was OK before.

I’ve never eaten mussels. Do you eat them raw?

All I can say is my hep said any seafood/shellfish, has to be cooked thoroughly because of the risk of bacteria or parasites in some cases.
