Hungry at last

I have started taking Urso three weeks ago..at present on 500mg a day but going up to 750 g next week..which I think is too much for my small weight of 49 kilos however the urso has made me hungry for the first time in ages so that is a big plus for me. Anyone else experienced this?

Hi there. I haven't noticed any change in appetite since starting URSO. However just wanted to add that the dosage you mentioned (750mg) appears correct for your weight when checked online. Older posts on this site too also confirm it. Hope this reassures you.

Hello bobbycat.

When I first started taking urso Dec 2010 it was recommended by my consultant that I have 10mgs per kg body weight. He wrote to the GP informing him to give me the diagnosis he had made and to write the prescriptions for the urso.

At the time my GP rounded my weight off to 60kgs which was over my actual body weight so he could give me tablets rounded off to that. I was on 600mgs daily. Since 2010 I have lost a bit of weight but not overly much. I reckon due to itching at night and fidgeting about through the night and I don't tend to eat anything following evening meal around 6p.m. so I am burning energy a lot then. I did read that the usual dosage seems to be between 12mgs to 15mgs per kg body weight and calculating mine these days from my actual body weight and the 600mgs I've always been on, I would say I take around 13mgs per kg body weight now.

You might find that the urso is making you have more of an appetite due to the fact that once it is established in your digestive system with improvements to it I expect that is the reason why. Hope you continue to improve. I know in my case it took a few years for the itch to subside somewhat and lessen but I would say currently I am doing quite OK.

I was put on 3 x 250 a day for 49KG. DR Faulk recommends 3 as the lowest dose starting at 47kg to 62 kg. the patient information leaflet say 1 x 3 times a day for first three months and then all three together once a day with your evening meal.

Just wrote a whole story and lost it! anyway thank you all for your input. I see dollydaydream is the same weight as me and takes 750 a day. I want to put my weight on that I lost but that was due to something else not really diagnosed over the two years - pain and aching in stomach and loss of weight quite quickly. 15 tests later! they think it was either a virus or it is non functional dyspepsia. Odd as I never got dyspepsia. It has been a strange and busy two years for my health and often frustrating as have had to travel to two different hospitals about an hour and a half drive away - luckily my partner doesnt mind - he has been very good. We are both retired now.

Anyway Apparently it is nothing to do with the liver?..... They are now more interested in the liver than anything else and the steep rise in the LFTS -

I have had PBC for over 20 years but forgot about it as had no symptons and LFTS remained quite high but OK so no medication given. I hardly drank so maybe that helped....

As some of you might know I am waiting for the result of the fibroscan to see if I have got the start of cirrhosis. I have very small varices in the throat. Asking for a letter from GP to confirm very small as I think the Travel Insurance will question that.
