Hi all, I'm having my biopsy in the morning and I'm soooo scared😳

Can anyone tell me it wasn't too bad? I'd rather not hear any horror stories!

Bellalou10, Hi

My biopsy was over 10 years ago but I do not remember it being that bad. I laid on an operating bed, not a sterile operating theatre, the nurse put me into a position on my back with my right arm raised above my head (it was a rather awkward position). I was asked to breathe normally but try to relax completely during the procedure. The doctor entered the room and told me that during the biopsy I would feel a sharp pain in my right shoulder - and I did - I was then sent up to the ward and rested until I was allowed home. In the video produced by the Foundation Dr. Neuburger says if you feel nervous ask for a little vallium to help relax you, personally I did not feel I needed anything to calm me.

If your procedure follows the same as mine I would say take a book or something to occupy you after the procedure as you must rest after the biopsy.

let us know how you got on, it will probably not be as bad as you fear.

best wishes

Hi Bellalou10 - don't worry!! I had one in August and was very nervous beforehand and I knew that I would likely get worse the closer I got to the procedure. So I told the consultant and asked for something to calm me down. I have no idea what I was given but it was fantastic. Although I was fully awake during the procedure and was able to respond to the docs instructions - I remember nothing about it whatsoever apart from the beginning & the end. I would thoroughly recommend the same if you are very nervous. I had some pain in my shoulder afterwards and think it woke me a couple of times that night but nothing unbearable. So go for it and try not to worry. It will be over before you know it. Good luck & keep us posted 🍀 PS As you have to lie down for a number of hours afterwards make sure & go to the loo just before you have it done.

Thanks Lisa that makes me feel a lot better. I have such a knot in my stomach and could have a panic attack just thinking about it, can't believe how scared I feel. I really hope it goes as smoothly for me, thanku again and I'll update tomorrow if I'm not too drunk on the sedative! X

Hi Bellalou, don't worry, it is not at all painful. Keep as still as possible. Biggest bore is having to lie on your side for 3 hours afterwards! Take a book to read. Xx

I remember mine being quite quick. It seemed to just be a matter of deciding what they were aiming for, sticking in the gear, chopping off a sample and then taking it out. I found it was a strange feeling that made me wince a bit but nothing too much and I am a terrible wimp.

I had my biopsy at the same time as my first drain being fitted and my sister in law came in with me. I found it really helped having her there. When I had my second drain fitted I did it alone and the doctor and two nurses completely ignored me. They continued to chat as if I was not there and that did not make for a good experience.

Sending you lots of good wishes.

I thought the procedure was fairly quick, 5 minutes probably. The worst like someone else mentioned was laying still for awhile afterwards, for me it was only an hour maybe because my prothrombin time was really good. The first thing the Dr. did first was found the spot with the ultrasound between the ribs and marked it, then he started the numbing process by injecting lidocaine and going in a little further each time which was a very short process (as the liver has no nerves). Once it was good and numb he then used that syringe thingy with like a spring in it that makes a clicking sound when it goes in and then it was done and over with and they got what looked like the smallest piece of purple string. If it is going to be very stressing for you then I would ask for something to help calm your nerves. You should be fine. Good luck to you!

Hi Bellalou. Dont worry, it is not that bad. I had mine 6years ago, was a bit sore the first day. The specialist kept me in hospital overnight in case of internal bleeding, but I can really say you dont have to be scared. Good luck

hi, not at all painful. dentist can be much worse. its a weird feeling, clicks and maybe achy shoulder. Over in 5 minutes. I've had two biopsy's. important to lay fairly still and rest for a 12 hour period afterwards. take a book, watch tv. The good nurses will look after you. x

Hi

Im actually waiting to have my 9th biopsy next month. They are uncomfortable but it really depends on where they go in from iv found between my ribs is the most comfortable. Make sure you go to the toilet before or you will need to use the bed pan and we all know how uncomfortable they are. Remember your a strong woman this is just another hurdle but you will be fine

Good luck beautiful x

Hi. Had mine about four years ago. From what I remember the doctor used an ultrasound to find suitable position. Mine was between my ribs. When the procedure was being done I had to hold my breath for a moment, only the liver moves all of the time. It was over within minutes, no paid, just a bit of a nuisance having to lay still for a couple of hours. Take a good book with you. Good luck and try not to worry. Eileen

It was quite a few years ago since I had my biopsy, but what I can say is that for me it was almost painless and over in a few minutes , the procedure sounds worse than it is, so please don't worry .

Seriously hand pn heart it was ome of the simplest tests ive had..

And ive had quite a few.a radiagrapher did mine.they freeze the area with a spray i think....so lomg ago!! And they take a few very small bits of sample from the liver it didnt hurt at alll iits just a bit of a strange sensation and you do hear a click which is just a bit wierd but as i say no pain.the most annoying tjimg is that yoi have to lie still forquite a while afterwards if its still the same....so do take a good book with you.i had my 3 month old prem baby with me who wouldnt take a bottle and i breast fed him will i was lying on my back after ld had it done..that was interestimg ha ha the nurse had to hold him over my shoulder upside down as there was no other position to get him to feed! So please please dont be scaared there is no need its almost as simple as an ultrasoind.it was pre google days when l had mine done and i was in total ignorance of any info apart from they said i might feel achy the following day but i didnt even ache.so good luck but im sure you will be fine.let us know how you go. Best wishes cazer.

Hi!Ballalou10

I Had a liver biopsy in 2002 which confirmed I had PBC. Never found it a problem. Uncomfortable is how I would describe it. Nothing worst. Had two more after transplant last year whilst in hospital after op. Again no problems. Was nervous with first one but no problems with others.

Good luck
