Hello Lucylongstockungs.

It seems that it is ok to take something like an antacid for heartburn with PBC but if you read the Patient Info Leaflet (PIL) that you should have with the urso, it does mention this type of medication and how to space it out. Seems that you are taking it spaced out.

How long have you been taking urso? Just wondering as in the early days of starting on urso (Dec 2010) I suffered heartburn for 2mths and then if vanished. I have suffered it since with a change of urso last yr and that did not budge for the 84 days duration of the tablets, so much so I asked for a different manufacturer and have been quite ok since.

I do have the odd evening where I feel like I am going to develop heartburn but don't seem to have a problem. I don't eat high fat foods but on holiday last week have to say that a couple days due to the things I was doing and the times (later evening meal and a quick meal), found I did feel a bit acidic later at night but put it down to the fact that I ate later and know that I had eaten food that I never really do back home.

I did take the odd calcium tablet of an evening when I was suffering badly last year with a change of urso and that seemed to solve the issue for me. (I'm not on calcium tablets by the way, just thought that them being chalky might do the trick plus you never know the odd one might do me some good!)

Thanks peridot. I've been taking urso since February. I had heartburn at first but that settled. I think this is from a change in my blood pressure tablets I've been to the chemist today to get sorted out. It was unbearable yesterday it was so bad I couldn't sleep ...today I have been a grump! It's feeling a bit better now. But I couldn't just stop taking my blood pressure tablets over the weekend so I took the gaviscon instead.

Hello again Lucylongstockungs.

Even though it is said as I was reading symptons you can get with PBC, heartburn can be a common problem for us. I never had heartburn prior to starting urso so I wonder there myself. After all urso is a bile acid and it is going straight to our stomachs as opposed to the normal way it would and more than likely in a larger quantity than normally required as it is our gallbladder that normally releases bile when we eat. (Don't know how it works for those with no gallbladders but expect simply released directly as opposed being released from a store as the gallbladder is.)

Lying down is normally not recommended for a few hours following eating if you are prone to heartburn so maybe you could prop yourself up with pillows when attempting to sleep.

I hope you start to resolve the issue as to me the less medications we can take now the better and not sure long-term how one would get on with an antacid. Expect that is a question to pose to a doctor.

Hi Lucylongstockungs, it seems very comon to suffer this way when you have PBC. I have been prescribed lansoprazole 30mg capsules for reflux and they are the only thing that seems to work for me, just one in a morning. Without these i think it would be unbearable, i used to have to try sleep sitting up, and sleep is a rare enough occurence anyway. Good luck with this I know how miserable this condition makes you.

I have been taking gaviscon with urso, but I did not ask my doctor if it would have any affects. You might just want to call and ask a nurse first.

Hi Lucylongstockungs,

I was advised by my GP that it was ok to take Gaviscon but it did not solve the problem for me. Therefore the GP prescribed me with Omeprazole. I was suffering at night time so was advised to take it along with my URSO with my evening meal around 6pm and that works really well for me.

Lucylongstockings, I am sorry you are struggling with acid reflux. My rx sheet says no antacids with aluminum in it within 1 hour before a dose or 2 hours after you take the urso. One of the side effects of urso is indigestion. I had trouble for about 6 weeks before my body adapted to the new meds. Best wishes!

Thanks. I'm sure this is absolutely nothing to do withthe urso. I've been on it since feb. I had some problems at first but that settled down. I think it's my new blood pressure tablets. I've been to the chemist who have agreed to change them but I just think every thing is inflamed now and it ll just take time to settle down, it's quite uncomfortable but Not as bad as it was. So I think I'll be ok taking the gaviscon as long as it's not at the same time as the urso.
