What I've been told is to use stuff cautiously, so I do take paracetamol if I have pain - probably a dose every month or so then, for me. In a sense Ibuprofen, if you take it in large doses long-term, can damage your liver more than occasional paracet. It depends though how damaged your liver is, and the cause to a point, and each case is individual. Also ibuprofen, esp if you have liver damage, can increase bleeding so not great in HIGH doses if you've had a tooth extraction. One dose fine, and i hope you are less sore.

Your dentist should really have discussed this with you before sending you home. If he/she didn't know, then he/she should have discussed with a doctor. If you need help, you can phone the out of hours service - here in Scotland, it is NHS24.

Thanks witchiegirl. How confusing is all this and i am an ex nurse and midwife! Makes sense what you say especially as last wisdom tooth removal the blood clot in the tooth sockett dissolved and i took lots of ibuprofen as i had not been diagnosed with pbc then. My mother had pbc and my sister has it. Iwas commenced on urso in the spring as my liver results had got slightly worse. I only have joint problems , and dry eyes. No itch thankfully. Feeling low and tired more easily bu tend to think its approaching 60fast i.e. In feb!

I was told use paracetamol but not ibuprofen. There seems to be some mixed messages on this one.

Hi. I was told okay to use paracetamol. But only use it when I am really in pain. Which isn't very often .thank goodness! But if I have a headache I use headex the roll on across your forehead . . It's brilliant i must say :) x

Ibuprofen is one that isn't recommended in liver disease. Possibly because there is more than one painkiller in it. I know that a lot say the same but apparently paracetamol is one that is recommended in the normal doses as stated on the packs.

I have the PBC Foundation leaflet for patient and also GP and paracetamol is mentioned in one as being 'tolerated' (unless in a final state with PBC).

I haven't taken any painkillers, etc since my first abnormal LFTs in 2010 (diagnosed by Dec that year). I will now only take anything if necessary.

I know when was waiting for the results of the AMA back in late 2010, I realised that I'd prob have to have a biopsy if the results turned up negative. I did read about biopsies and it did state that following one, you can take paracetamol.

I have never had wisdom teeth but my daughter had to have one removed a couple yrs ago. She took painkillers following for a few days. I was informed years ago by an old dentist when I had a tooth extraction that the best way to actually treat the site where the tooth was was by gargling with warm salty water. He said that warm water was better than cold. Don't know if this would help with your extraction as after-care but I know all those years ago for a deep rooted tooth extraction for me, I did feel much better though I think with relatively easy extractions of our second teeth you don't seem to carry as much pain unlike it appears a wisdom tooth.

PS I'd not ask my husband's advice who did have a wisdom tooth yanked out at the dentist 10yrs ago. He said no sooner was he out the dentist surgery he went straight to an off-licence and bought some alcohol to blot out the pain overnight! The good thing tho' is that since I was diagnosed he doesn't readily reach for painkillers or ibuprofen if he has a mild headache like he used to, says if I can do without anything (though I've not really had any problems that I might consider as yet), he shall too.
