can we not fight illness the same?
Well I can say I've not actually been ill with a short-term virus in several years now. When I worked in a GP surgery (cleaner) during surgery hours came into contact with medical staff, admin and patients and on 2 occasions did succumb to some tummy bug as most of the practice did at the time. (I left that job in 2009 for a different job.)
Apart from the itching of PBC I can't really say I've got much else wrong with me.
I still do not get colds as never really did despite my brother here once/twice a week who does succumb frequently to colds as does my son who still lives at home.
If you are feeling sick and being sick it figures that you cannot keep the urso down. When my son was a little lad he used to get chest infections and then due to a build up of phlegm he would be sick. The GP who called did say that I should put some Coke in a small glass, leave it standing until the fizz started to go out of it and then let him have the little odd sips. It would give him the sugar and salts he could start to lack and otherwise become dehydrated. Being a child my son did like this and I found it did seem to work.
I know I'd not recommend Coke or any fizzy drink myself with PBC now (never drank that much prior, not a fizzy drinks fan) but if you are feeling sick then just for a very short period of time it might actually be of some help to get you on the road to recovery.
If you live in England seems there is always some bug or other going round. My family were struck a few weeks ago with some sickness bug that took several days to start alleviating so you might just have picked something like that up.
Hope you start on the mend soon.
My advice would be not to assume anything about your health. If you are not well and can't take your medication you should let your GP know about it. There are times when you will need to be at the GP frequently and other times when everything goes seemingly swimmingly and you feel not so bad a lot of the time.
Your GP or the Consultant you see are not mind readers. You need to tell them what is going on.
Hi Angel I agree with Judyt best to contact dr for advice you can just ring him/her and ask for advice as firstly you do not want to get dehydrated or end up more ill through not being able to eat or drink. Secondly you need your medicine so do get his or her advice. Hope you feel better soon.
Hello judyt.
Yes I fully agree that it is best not to assume anything. I always try to say that if anyone has any doubts to seek a doctor's personal opinion. On a lighter note, on this site we may all have PBC but like a doctor, he can't really comment on something unless he sees that person. It can be helpful receiving a bit of input on here but again, if anything is worrying, it is far better to see the doctor.
I do have to say one thing and it isn't intended to be taken the wrong way. Littlemo you have mentioned that angel74 'needs the medicine' but from my personal point of view here, I do think that if one isn't eating correctly for a brief spell due to a virus or another reason then I don't think it will matter too much missing out on taking urso for a day or two.
I say this because part of 2011 and also 2012 whilst I was trying to get my head round the urso and also the itch, I got a bit down a time or two and then found I couldn't eat (I'm one of these who unfortunately for many many years now has found any traumatic or upsetting situation simply causes me not to feel hungry, dry mouth and I simply cannot temporarily - apparently it is the adrenaline taking over). My theory at the time was if I didn't eat then no use in taking the urso at the time as it is a form of bile that is used for breaking down fats mainly.
I skipped urso for a day and half and the oddest thing I first found was that I did not go through the itch those 2 nights and for a couple nights following even though I had eaten again and taken the urso. That's my experience of course and I'd not actually recommend it but I did have good reason at the time.
