Heart pounding

What can cause a pounding heart. It’s not necessarily fast, I can just feel it thumping away all through my body. And also sometimes hot sweats. I wonder if it coul be either low or high potassium. The last check I had was April and it was just slightly high. But with doing B12 injections EOD does it deplete potassium?

No, not at this stage of treatment. I think you are under a lot of stress and recovery from B12 deficiency is a difficult, stressful and at many times gruelling process. Keep a good diet, don't drink litres of coconut water or take massive doses of anything you're not deficient in and keep on keeping on.

I did have my flu and Covid vaccines on Saturday, I wondered if they could affect anything.

My husband and son in law have both had to stop having Covid jabs as they gave them both palpitations.

I felt a little rundown for a couple days after my covid vaccine, two weeks ago. Hang in there.

I’d had events of what i used to call “ nasty turns “ before I knew that I had Pernicious Anaemia . Subsequently diagnosed by a positive Intrinsic Factor antibody test ) I used to get terrifying palpitations for several seconds . and sometimes passed out briefly . Dismissed by doctors . — But since i have got the correct treatment for P.A. for me ( B12 injections once a week-self injected ) I have not had one episode in 10 years .

Maybe you need more regular injections? Best wishes .

I have been on SI EOD for four months now, plus cofactors.

good morning,

well I get those rapid pounding heart beats as well during the night, it wakes me up with a strange rush feeling in my brain I'ts hard to explain the brain feeling I get but it happens at night, the I also get the sweating all of a sudden too. I'm thinking it's all healing that the body is going through. I'm taking everything cofactor's too so I just believe it's the healing process, I've read on hear that so many things are going on inside of us during this healing time. I just started my 5th month of inj. I was EOD for the first 4 months then the last 2 1/2 weeks i've been doing every day and it's helped sooo much. at first I did splitting up my 1 ml then I started more later and it helps me a lot. I need a more now that I'm doing more during the day.

Chickens44 in reply toJesusMercy60

You and I are at the same point. I’m just into my fifth month too. Yes it’s a horrible feeling. Hard to explain, but i just feel really rotten. I felt my whole body was experiencing my heart beat. Some people have said ‘I feel like I’m dying’ and it is that sort of feeling. I was just saying to someone, I can’t wait for the day when I can look back at this time and it will all be a distant memory!

I’m still doing EOD at the moment. What folic dose are you taking at the moment.

Chickens44 profile image
Chickens44 in reply toJesusMercy60

you say you are doing every day, is that with hydroxocobalamin or the cyano version?

JesusMercy60 profile image
JesusMercy60 in reply toChickens44

I changed to cyano b12 the methylated gave me anxiety, both methyl folate and methylcobalamin. I have a multi vitamin by llama naturals that is food and fruit natural multi vitamin that has the folate, I eat them through the whole day plus from the food I eat as well, I haven't been low on my blood work yet for folate but I do need to get a new script for new blood work it's been a while. I do every day now injections. I started with 1/2 ml everyday so I would not have a slump in the day of eod, then I started going to my grandkids practice for football in the late eve and my feet were starting to hurt more so one of our members here on the forum told me her routine when she was at 4 months and so I did 1 ml in the morning then in the eve 1 ml and that help a bunch of course then I had a couple of days of more reversing out because it was more doses but then that did not last long I was way better to get out and do more. then at night I do another 1 ml for sleeping and healing of the nerves while I rest. Her doses that she did really helped me.

Same for me! I am in my 6th month of EOD injections and have just had one week of every day due to having a virus. I also feel a lot better (despite the virus), more alert, my tinnitus seems less obvious, less tired in general, less brain fog moments etc. I am going to keep going with every day for another week or so and may continue this way! I was actually trying to reduce at this point but I feel so much better with the increase.

JesusMercy60 profile image
JesusMercy60 in reply toClaireWF1346

Good morning ClairWF1346,

yes that's nice your starting to see the light of the other side! even if you have a virus just knowing we will get past the treatment phase is a Blessing from our Lord. also I don't plan at all in the near future to lessen my dosages yet, I know my nerves are having to still heal as I can feel them when I get low on B12 that symptoms would be strong again at this time of healing. I tried to do that earlier in treatment and I felt like wow this is not good. with the increase I feel that it will continue healing a bit faster maybe. I know our bodies are all different though. but We all do heal for sure.

This happened to me.It resulted in low ferritin .

Has this bedn checked recently?

My iron and ferritin level dropped during EOD b12 Injections.

Once this was corrected my heart rate steadied and hot sweats greatly reduced .

Chickens44 profile image
Chickens44 in reply toNackapan

I had an iron infusion in May and last test I had the level was good.

Orchard33 profile image
Orchard33 in reply toChickens44

Was it iron or ferritin? If ferritin you may need iron supplementation orally as well to make good blood with B12.

Low potassium does this to me. I put 1/2 teaspoon of cream of tarter on my tongue and chug down a glass of water. This sorts me out. I did not realise that B12 injections use a lot of potassium. If this has just started since you have had covid and flu injections I would go and see the doctor. I was in hospital 6 months ago never seen so many patients with blood clots and on blood thinning iv's in my life.

Hi Chickens

I experienced this too in the early days of my treatment and I recall falling asleep to the sound of a marching beat! It was like trying to sleep on a drum!

Although it may be contrary to general expectations, my potassium levels did fall as I increased my injections particularly when I moved from every other day to every day. So definitely worth getting levels checked. It is my understanding that if potassium is low then calcium can elevate.

Also worth getting your bloods checked for any adverse effects from the flu jab and/or covid. That’s the only way you will get peace of mind.

Meanwhile, there is no harm increasing to every day injections and log how you feel. You may want to increase you folic acid too - if you are currently taking 400ug every other day then you could try taking it every day. Also keep an eye on your vitamin D level.

Ideally you should have a full blood test every 6 months so you can check cofactors and ideally keep them in the above mid range and ideally around 75%. For example 2 years ago my vitamin D was 36 and it’s now around 170 - sorry no ranges to hand!

Keep good notes too so you can look back to spot trends.

Don’t forget to be kind to yourself as recovering from B12 deficiency is a long and painful path and it can be lonely and scary. You’ve been so brave and come a long way.

Thanks everybody for the info. I've been going through the same heart problem, with it thumping all night. I was starting to think that perhaps it wasn't B12. But reading your experiences, I will keep on self injecting. I know have more confidence in my decision.Silly name is because I had put one coat of dark varnish on a door and couldn't find the energy to put the second coat on. I am getting some energy back, so it won't be long now. Dark varnishing is my goal 😂

Hiya Chickens,

As u already know I’m also into my fifth month and yep I get those pounding heart moments too. I’m also in agony with the base of my back but I keep telling myself ur getting better n it has to hurt to repair the damage. So hold on in there as a lot of us are taking this fairground ride. Keep the safety bar on n no hands outside the car 🤣🤣

I’ve just recovered from this covid so thankful for that. As for the SI all is well my partner Nate is getting good at them. We’ve only hit a vein three times in my tummy which is good going in my book. I still don’t like seeing the needle 🫣 but I look forward to my injections. Hope u are also now seeing some improvement. I have started to feel now too that maybe Fibro is just a kind of B12 deficiency. 😊🤗

Chickens44 profile image
Chickens44 in reply toSlothMode

Yes, I keep referring it to a rollercoaster ride. One minute you’re at the top, and then suddenly you drop down into a low. My other analogy is like being on a boat on the sea. Some days it’s plain sailing, then you come into a storm, then a lull when you don’t seem to be getting anywhere. You don’t know what each day will bring. Ido wonder whether fibro is just B12 deficiency too. And lots of other medical conditions.

So we’ve just got to stay on the ride until it finishes. 🎢 😬

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply toChickens44

Fibromyalgia is definitely made worse by nutrient deficiency and coping with Fibro flares ( or flares in any chronic health issues) use up more nutrients because of the stress responses and healing process. But each condition causes very different symptoms and it's a bit of a vicious circle , you need each thing under good control to help improve the symptoms overall.

It feels like having a full time job getting all of your illnesses to behave at once. I describe my body to being similar to a hospital nursery. One baby kicks off and it makes every other baby cry for attention as well.

Hi Bleareyed

I just love this “It feels like having a full time job getting all of your illnesses to behave at once. I describe my body to being similar to a hospital nursery. One baby kicks off and it makes every other baby cry for attention as well.”

It’s spot on and to be expected because our bodies are made up of many interdependent systems - nothing works in isolation and they all work best when working together.

It’s important to focus on the weakest link in our health systems as they will inhibit the benefits of stronger links. I have found that out the past couple of years!

All my babies were crying - gradually calming them!

Exactly n who knows how long the track is or how many loop the loops we have to experience on this ride. Just know there is a sloth sat next to u n a whole lot of others on our ride. When we reach the end we will be smiling n that is what keeps me going 🦥🐓😊

Are you low in Folate or Vitamin D as well as having the diagnosed B12 Deficiency? B 12 Deficiency can often mask the other Insufficiency issues like Folate.

So you may have started to get your B12 to better levels but still have the symptoms if you are still insufficient, or very low, in Folate, Vitamin D or Iron .

All these Insufficiencies or Deficiencies cause palpitations and very similar symptoms to PA and B12 Deficiency.

You need to get all of these nutrients within a healthy range to reduce many of the symptoms completely that are associated with B12 Deficiencies.

You also need to get an idea whether you do have a salt imbalance or whether your potassium or sodium are causing the symptoms.

I had both functional B12 Deficiency Anaemia and Folate Deficiency when I was diagnosed. I was eventually diagnosed with Pancreatic Enzyme Insufficiency, a uncommon cause for these deficiency issues.

I was advised to take a Methylfolate supplement and sublingual B12 each day between my B12 injections and Folate/ Iron infusion.

It would probably be a good idea to request some nutrient tests because you have these symptoms. NICE does recommend getting tested for other nutrients even though you shouldn't be tested for B12 every 6-12 months ( every 12 months is the limit of Vitamin D).

I'd suggest requesting your GP to check your full blood count, kidney function ( electrolytes) , Folate , Ferritin/ Iron and Vitamin D.

If you haven't had a test or not had one for over 12 months getting a Diabetic HbA1C test is also important in the first group of monitoring tests because being Prediabetic or Type 2 can also cause palpitations.

If all of those tests come back as normal you could request a Thyroid panel.

If you have other symptoms like chest pain , breathlessness on activity, dizziness on standing or during exercise and you are getting higher readings for you blood pressure and heart rate you might benefit from requesting additional checks on your heart like a Holter test just to rule out things other than nutrient deficiency.

Don't forget though , even if you get your B12 levels up it can take months or even a year or more for all of the symptoms you had to stop re-emerging especially if you had problems for a long time before your diagnosis or have other health issues as well. The body needs quite a bit of time to heal especially if your Deficiency was severe and caused you neurological symptoms before treatment.

I also find that my neurological and cardiac symptoms still begin to increase now in the week or two before my next injection as my levels are probably dropping.

Hope things improve soon , Bee

Chickens44 profile image
Chickens44 in reply toBlearyeyed

Thanks for your detailed reply Bee, I have had every test, scan and check known to mankind. A lot of which were done at my own volition, as GP not on board with B12 deficiency or in finding out what was causing all my symptoms. Good folate, and now iron level after infusion in May. Taking all cofactors and also on vitamin D protocol. I think possibly just need to be patient, as I’ve been suffering with many of the symptoms for nearly 20 years now, which was diagnosed as fibromyalgia.

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply toChickens44

It is possible that you have Fibromyalgia still because you've had undiagnosed B12 Deficiency for so long it has affected the autonomic nervous system messaging and triggered the Fibromyalgia. That's certainly what happened in my case , I also have EDS and POTs .

its possible to be electrolytes imbalance. For almost 3 years and half , I have severe peripheral neuropathy and I used to taking b12 and folate along with other supplements, but improvement wasn't was satisfying satisfying. Then I started keto diet which is so challenging for people with severe peripheral neuropathy because muscles can't efficiently get energy from ketones at least for first three months and adaption takes longer for these people and since potassium get stored along with glycogen for immediate activity then if there is no stored glycogen then there is no enough potassium for immediate electrolytes balancing and it put pressure on heart to work harder in order to help muscles to work efficiently but pounding heart and increased heart rate and elevated blood pressure showing body needs more potassium and also glycogen even for short period of time so I suggest to take more potassium also increase taking sodium and magnesium. 4700 mg per day potassium is required and lots of people can't meet that daily and they take low sodium and magnesium which hinders peripheral neuropathy improvement. I think people with peripheral neuropathy should go in low carb keto and after a while their muscles get adapted to fat then it's time go to zero carb. Tingling muscles showing blood flow into muscles and increased stem cells. So your heart pounding probably is eigher due to low potassium or having higher physical activity. Always protecting of heart has higher priority

Technoid profile image
Technoid in reply tomo2march

The most memorable quote I encountered on the keto diet is from Lisa Mosconi, Diirector of the Alzheimer's Prevention Clinic at Weill Cornell Medical College. In her book, "Brain Food" she writes:

"You might have heard of ketone bodies if you've ever been on certain low-carb diets. One in particular is called the ketogenic or "keto" diet and it is a neuro-nutritionist's nightmare"

If you don't yet have electrolyte issues but you'd like to experience them, the ketogenic diet can be a great option to experience them because it removes many healthy foods which are high in potassium.

You can then have fun trying to get your nutrients to work in Cronometer while still remaining in Ketosis. If that wasn't enough most people can't follow a ketogenic diet long-term and side effects may include constipation, elevated uric acid, fatigue, fetal harm and stillbirth for pregnant women, low blood pressure, muscle cramps, nausea and a foul odour in the mouth.

If your keto diet choices go heavy on the animal foods and saturated fat then you have an excellent chance of acquiring an elevated LDL and ApoB into the bargain. So unless it's carefully done you could also add atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease as a bonus.

As a solution to a potential electrolyte issue, there is possibly no worse dietary decision. Although I guess there is the carnivore diet.

mo2march profile image
mo2march in reply toTechnoid

uric acid is a strong antioxidant and may it it goes high at the beginning but after a while it get back to normal during fasting. Constipation is not important issue and if you nourish body with good amount of potassium like eating kale ,avocado and potassium rich supplement I don't think it becomes an issue but the problem is with people in peripheral neuropathy, Muscle cells can't functtion normal and causes non efficiency in consuming ketones generated by liver. Even if you take MCT oil these muscle cells with damaged Mylene sheath nerves can't consume that in fast physical activity due to bad signaling of related nerves so muscles fatigue forces heart to work harder and raise blood pressure and heart rate a lot and may cause damage to heart muscle cells. High fat from animal sources I think is not problem in moderate amount because LDL like HDL. have important role in the body by carrying fat from liver to cells and from gut to liver make life possible but LDL particles are causing problem if inflammatory materials in the body damage epithelial cells in arteries causing damage it can causes depositing LDL particles and not LDL in the crack of arteries and T cells also attack them and causing deposition of them in the spot and blockage of arteries.artherie so risk factor of heart disease is not LDL but triglycerides which coming from carbohydrate and insulin resistance. Keto is amazing diet and extended diet can heal lots of diseases by high amount of stem cells generation and autophagy state but for people with peripheral neuropathy is not much straight forward and adaptation takes much longer But timing of adding healthy carbohydrate in low amount can help adaptation of muscle cells with ketones and then by adventing zero carb and intermittent and extended fasting heal damaged nerves. But timing of adding carb in low amount is crucial like one banana in mid of day and second fruit at night can help replenish muscles for quick muscle activities.

All starting to sound very complicated to me. I understand some of the technical stuff, but all this talk of keto diets and causes and effects is confusing me. And scary, I don’t want to be frightened I’m not doing the right thing and causing all sorts of major health scares. 😲
