B12 leaking out of top of vial. Safe?

I'm about half way thru a bottle. When I put the needle in the top to push the air out and suck it in to the syringe it goes into syringe fine but starts dripping out of the puncture hole too and down the outside of the needle.

I decided to throw the bottle away cuz seemed like there maybe some concern over contamination. Did i do the right thing?

You did the right thing! Single use vials are safer to use. Multi-use vials are more appropriate for clinic use where staff have been trained in aseptic technique, and the vial should be used more quickly.

You made the right decision.

We find it strange in the U.K. that patients in the USA often use multi-dose vials for injections . Using Single-use ampoules is definitely the safest way to inject B12 .

My B12 comes in 10 dose vials. I have not had a problem with them. The top is wiped with alcohol before/after using it.

It’s not meant as a criticism! It’s what we read in medical notes , that where possible , self injectors should use single use ampoules , not multi dose vials . If a multi dose vial was all I could get , then I would use that too . I’m sure that you take every precaution.

I am on the fence about what to do. I usually inject once per week. The vials say to only keep for one month. The pharmacist says that if I handle it carefully, I can safely use all 10 doses. But it costs so little that I am wondering if I should toss it after 4 doses as instructed.

I think that getting rid of it after one month is a good idea . It will give you peace of mind . I have seen on the online Canadian pharmacies that supply Cynocobalamin, that some of them do sell the single use ampoules , if that’s of interest to you . Best wishes.

I didn't know you are supposed to only use a bottle for a month. I've used one for at least 2 months before. Is this because the b12 goes bad or risk of contamination?

It’s the risk of contamination . In a medical situation , a vial with several doses would be used up quickly and injections would be administered by a professional. That’s vastly different to a domestic situation . The risk to you is small if you strictly observe hygiene. But never keep your vial for longer than 1 month . And I would only use single use ampoules These are now available from Canadian online pharmacies . Best wishes .

It is strange, wedgewood. It's what we are given in the USA, for the most part, and almost always cyan. We are not given a choice in the matter.

That and not being prescribed as much as I need is one of the many reasons that I began sourcing my b12 from Germany.

I have been banned from more than one US-based PA forum because I warned people about the possible dangers of multi-use vials.

I have very much appreciated your posts - and gambit's, and others over the years. Were it not for this forum, I am not sure I would still be alive.

So lovely to hear from a sister “ over the pond “ ! I really find it strange that the wealthiest country on the planet has such arrangements . Cynocobalamin is so last century now ! And then for it to be offered in multi -dose vials is extraordinary . ( It is obtainable now in single use ampoules from some Canadian online pharmacies)

Yes I believe that apohealth.de does ship to USA . This forum is honestly a life saver . I just love it! Best wishes

Hi there you don’t need to push air out just put the needle in the bottle and withdraw liquid with syringe. You can tap air out of syringe I generally squirt a tiny bit out.
