How long do reserves last?

I stopped self injecting Dec2021 as my level was way over the top score in my blood test. I was OK until the last few months. Does this mean my reserves are used up, as I have been sleeping 12 hours a night and my feet have got more numb. My level was OK last year. I haven't been tested for B12 since.

Hi pom01326,

This illness/disease is symptom based. Please know that once injections or supplements have been commenced then it is absolutely pointless testing or monitoring levels in the blood or serum. That is from the British Society for Haematology.

It is similar to the following scenario :-

1) On a scale of 0 to 10, how much pain are you in ? Answer given.

2) Analgesia given.

3) Wait a period of time. Ask again, On a scale of 0 to 10, how much pain are you in ? Answer given.

If the second answer given is less than the first, then No Further Action.

If the second answer is the same, then analgesia did not work. Therefore, offer a different type of pain relief.

Your body is telling you that you need to inject by your symptoms. Sleeping 12 hours and numb feet. It would have been kinder if you had treated it a few months ago.

You see pom01326, Our bodies whisper (we ignore it), it whispers again (we ignore it) and then it screams at us, I need attention.

On that note, I’m going to the toilet, as my bladder is saying, I am full and need relief.

I will get another test. I know there no point in testing while injecting or for some time after. Thank you for your reply.

As Nawhal has stated testing not necessary now .

Levels are meant to be kept high.

As ypu have gone several yesrs without treatment I wonder what the cause is.

If dietary or stores depleted ftom medication one replaced your body can use b12 from the sores in thd 'normal ' way.

But if not replaced you will then be back to square one

If sn absorbtion problem or PA injections must nevef be stopped and b12 levels kept high .

No need to test.

You don't need a test. You need B12 to deal with your tingly toes.

Hi,

I suspect I have serum B12 levels well into the 1000s and I think many other forum members who self treat will have levels well over the top of the range.

Some forum members have had their NHS B12 treatment withdrawn in past due to GPs being unhappy with high serum B12 level.

Two articles that mention misconceptions about B12 deficiency

If you have PA, you should get treatment for life. It is normal to test high after supplementing which is why it is recommended that B12 levels are NOT tested. With numb feet, you should got back to every other day loading doses. Then find a maintenance dose to keep away the fatigue and numb feet.
