Apple cider vinegar gummies

Hi, although I tested IF antibody negative, I'm experiencing nasty gastritis that I think is linked to low stomach acid. Long term I feel I'll need to acidify my stomach but I'm looking for a gentle way. I've seen lime juice and apple cider vinegar recommended but can't take the latter 'straight'.Has anyone found the ACV gummies work well for this purpose? Thanks for sharing.

I use cider vinegar on food.I.e baked potatoes instead of malt vinegar I usually use.

Goes on baked beans too.

Just add sone towards the end of a meal.

Lemon or lime oe any acidic juice to drink.

Not tried gummies Wouldn't it just prolong the taste if you not keen?

Thanks for your suggestions Nackapan. It's not so much the taste of ACV, but the fumes seem to irritate my throat and sinuses. The gummies sound much gentler but I wonder if that means they don't work...

So whats wrong with lemon squash with no added sugar. It works very well and I drink it all the time.

Nothing Bellabab! I think your message was posted after my reply to Nackapan, I've only just seen it. It certainly seems an easy and accessible way to get some gentle acid into the stomach. Do you drink it through the day, or specifically before/after meals?

Bellabab profile image
Bellabab in reply toMyoldcat

Yes I drink it all day and particularly at meals. I also eat half a tangerine with each meal before which I also take a Betain - HCL capsule. Faecal motions show complete digestion of food.

Thanks Bellabab, that's really helpful.

There are several recipes on the internet for drinks using apple cider vinegar .You might find one that suits you . It’s the only vinegar I use . I buy a 5 litre container of organic ACV with mother good value . There are also ACV tablets and capsules available .

Thanks Wedgwood, even diluted I've found it too strong in the past. Perhaps capsules are the answer.

Hi!

Husband adds a tablespoon to a 259ml jug of water and sips throughout the day water. The taste is barely there and as the jug is without a lid the fumes dissipate quickly. He tops it up all day long and by the end of the day he’s drunk his quota of water without noticing

I’ve nagged him for 40’years about his water intake and it seems low stomach acid has been a blessing in disguise for our marriage 🙂

You have to take the wins where you can, Noelnoel! Interesting twist on how to take ACV. Does taking it this way help his stomach enough?

Noelnoel profile image
Noelnoel in reply toMyoldcat

Sorry for the typos in previous response

Yes, helps him enormously, although it was probably about two solid weeks before the difference was consistent. In fact he’s become an evangelical bore about it and especially about the unintended benefit of the extra water helping his bowels!

Whenever our 60 something year old friends complain of this or that food giving them acidic indigestion, he waxes lyrical on the benefits of ACV. However, ironically not one of them has taken his advice; I kept suggesting it to him and a year went by before he got desperate enough to try it

Should add that he longer needs it every day. Probably 3 or 4 days a week now

We can all be reluctant to try new things sometimes! In my case I've been prodded by such a horrible gastritis flare up that I'll do whatever I can to avoid it recurring.

Noelnoel profile image
Noelnoel in reply toMyoldcat

I imagine your stomach lining is inflamed and I don’t know that now is the right time to start but on the other hand, could it soothe? I’d be very cautious

Myoldcat profile image
Myoldcat in reply toNoelnoel

Thanks for your concern Noelnoel. Yes, that is the current situation so I'm using marshmallow, liquorice and ginger to soothe at the moment, plus beige food only, and will implement the acid supplement - whichever feeels most comfortable and effective - once things have calmed down. Athough I tried a glass of orange juice before beige chicken broth lunch today, and that seemed to help without irritating 🤞 And to think I used to boast of having a cast iron stomach, could eat anything...

My neighbours leave literally hundreds of apples on the ground in autumn. I collect them and make my own apple cider vinegar. Costs nothing but a couple of spoonfuls of sugar and works a treat for lots of stomach / intestinal issues 😊

Myoldcat profile image
Myoldcat in reply toLurcher-lady

Wow that's a great use for them!

Impressive! Just apples, sugar, water? And keep sealed? How long does it take?

Lurcher-lady profile image
Lurcher-lady in reply toMyoldcat

It depends on ambient temps but usually a couple of months max . Ill pm you my recipe 😉

When we’re away husband eats a couple of tart apples a day. Same effect

Myoldcat profile image
Myoldcat in reply toNoelnoel

Interesting! Apples are an undervalued digestive aid. My dear mum - who I believe had undiagnosed B12d - used to eat at least one every day.

My dear mum - who I believe had undiagnosed B12d

Funny you should say that. Same with my dad and mother-in-law. Many say the same and had I not decided to MMA test my husband (and children) GP would still be saying: well, your B12 looks fine 🤨

Myoldcat profile image
Myoldcat in reply toNoelnoel

Just discovered another 4 relatives from my large extended family have PA - first cousins!

Noelnoel profile image
Noelnoel in reply toMyoldcat

Really?!! There’ll probably be none or two more undiagnosed family members then.

I think it’s more prevalent than we know. Just like thyroid disease. I’d still be languishing if I hadn’t diagnosed myself AND my husband. Though a year since GP agreed that he’s hypo, hubby still hasn’t started levo

Myoldcat profile image
Myoldcat in reply toNoelnoel

I agree, which was one reason I reached out to the extended family on our Facebook page. It's a big family, spread around UK, US and Canada, and it's surprising how easy it is to lose touch. Some thyroid stuff sprinkled through the gene pool too!

Noelnoel profile image
Noelnoel in reply toMyoldcat

It’s intriguing and fascinating. Whenever a friend or family member talked about their health I often mentioned both diseases and often got the eye roll. They just don’t understand how possible it is they have one or both and when I talk about what happens when either of them are untreated I just know they think I’m exaggerating and that if it were the case their GP’s would’ve diagnosed it by now

I don’t say anything anymore but it feels wrong not to

It’s nice that you have a family Facebook page. Like that

Myoldcat profile image
Myoldcat in reply toNoelnoel

All my family, friends and close acquaintances are rushing to have their B12 checked - they don't want to be like me! The worry is that levels of 300 come back 'normal', not even flagged as low end or to be monitored. Yet an A&E doc I know said if anyone is admitted with confusion or neuro symptoms the FIRST THING they test is B12 🤷🏼‍♀️One branch of the NHS needs to talk to the other!

Noelnoel profile image
Noelnoel in reply toMyoldcat

That’s encouraging though to hear that at least some branches are enlightened. I really don’t know why the NHS isn’t more unified with communications a priority. How many lives and how much money would be saved

Be interesting to hear what your friends and family discover. Keep us posted

Myoldcat in reply toNoelnoel

They're in North America and they all seem to have done ok with diagnosis and treatment 🤞

I'd try the capsules that wedgewood mentioned. That way the ACV is encapsulated until it gets down where you want it. No fumes. The tablets might work if they're coated well.

And you can measure the amount you get whereas with gummies you might react to the gum or might not know how much ACV you are getting.

Myoldcat profile image
Myoldcat in reply toForViolet

Yes, those are good points ForViolet, thanks.

Wheat profile image

hello, ACV, also lemon and lime juice are too acidic neat, damaging to teeth, oesophagus, throat and tooth enamel.

So I add water 'til palatable, some add a teasp' honey. Followed by plain water to rinse teeth and swallow small amount. Take pre and post meal, bedtime too.

Hope the capsules/tablets work for you.

Another option is Betaine HCL capsules which work to add acid to stomach.

Best wishes x

I'm looking at possible options Wheat, and thinking ACV might be gentler than HCL so thanks for the info.

Have you any thyroid blood tests to post on thyroid uk as under active thyroid often causes low stomach acid. My stomach loads better now thyroid treated.

Myoldcat profile image
Myoldcat in reply toHectorsmum2

I don't think my thyroid was tested, only parathyroid. Will check. Still getting to grips with all the B12 stuff atm!

Just found some thyroid results. Returned 'normal' but they look a bit on the low side to me...

Hectorsmum2 profile image

Post them on thyroid uk for som e expertise. I was ill and told normal for 30 years so take normal with a pinch of salt.

I used ACV gummies for 6 months because it's so much easier to take them with you on holiday. Try getting a bottle of acv onto a plane!

I bought UCHU acv gummies. 120 gummies for £9.95 from Amazon. They have a slight ginger taste, as ginger is also beneficial to aid digestion. I do think they helped. Much kinder to tooth enamel too.

Myoldcat profile image
Myoldcat in reply togrumpyold

Ooh that sounds good grumpyold, glad to hear they helped. I was reluctant to buy in case they were just sugary sweets without much effect, but I'll check those out. Thank you.

I take ACV gummies for my heartburn, I also have low stomach acid. Positive IFA, so pernicious anemia & autoimmune atrophic gastritis & hashimotos. The taste is ok, still a little vinegary, but they do help most of the time. I haven't tried the pills, but I plan to buy them next. Something new that's been helping is to eat some organic dried mango as soon as I start to feel the heartburn coming on. This has helped more than the gummies and tastes much better.

Ooh the mango sounds interesting, will try that too. Thanks.

You can get Goli Apple Cider Vinegar Gummy that includes B12 from Amazon. Wife and I both take them. The added B12 does no good for me since I have PA, but helps her since she tends to run low. This is on US Amazon, but probably available on UK. No vinegar fumes and easy to take. Helps my gastritis flareups.

Myoldcat profile image

Good to know they help with the gastritis scnuke, they sound a useful addition to the digestive arsenal! I've seen them on the UK site.

I put balsamic vinegar on everything. Not for digestion, I'm just addicted. I even put in on bread sometimes. I have problems.

I am really interested in the same topic - how & what to ingest to decrease stomach PH as a result of Achlorhydria (secondary to Autoimmune Metaplastic Atrophic Gastrtitis). Regards Martin

Acute gastritis now calming, so I will be starting with gummies soon and will update on theyr effectiveness (or otherwise...!)

Myoldcat profile image
Myoldcat

Update :- I've tried the UCHU gummies, very easy and pleasant to take and they seem to help a bit... they certainly don't irritate. I've experimented with 2 after a meal, now trying 1 before and 1 after. The max dosage is 2 per day but I can't really see what ingredient would cause problems if I take more.
