Folic acid and B12 deficiency blood test

Hi I wonder if someone could give me some advice please I tried a vitamin B complex supplement for 3 days I was only able to take it for 3 days as it made me so ill this was about 6 days ago Then today my Rheumatologist decided to take some blood to check if I have a B12 or folate deficiency (I was actually there for another matter) I completely forgot to mention that I had tried the supplement. Given that I was only able to take it for a total of 3 days and stopped taking it 6 days ago surely this would not be significant an amount to have any impact on the results Thanks for any advice

hello mully,

I too tried a b complex, with very similar results.

I do not know the answer to your question. To be on the safe side you could leave a message for the Rheumatologist, or your gp ?

Sorry I can't be of real help.

Hi mully,

Welcome here. Sorry to read that the B complex has made you poorly. Some of the fillers or additives can be a problem. Like Wheat says leave a message for the Rheumatologist (from your other post it appears that this one has been helpful). Usually it is biotin, B7 that can skew results but I do not know whether 3 days would alter them significantly. It might be worth asking the Rheumatologist if they can check your Homocysteine level in a couple of weeks.

I note that you have quite a Medical History. Bless you, my lovely 😢 with a few autoimmune diseases of osteoporosis and AntiPhospholipid Syndrome (Hughes Syndrome) and complications.

I too have a history of Trigeminal Neuralgia which has more or less resolved with (Hydroxycobalamin - B12 injections) and being gluten free (coeliac disease).

Please know that B12 makes the outer covering of nerves. Although, if we have inflammation in our joints or muscles from our autoimmune diseases, we cannot move our bodies properly, so nerves can get ‘trapped’. I am just explaining there may be several reasons so it is not ‘cause and effect’.

Keep asking questions. Sorry, I could not be more helpful.

😘

Hi Thank you for the replies I some how wonder how its possible to have so many different auto immune conditions, at some level surely they all have to be connected rather than a different specialist and treatment for each condition

Unfortunately, as we age we collect them. I have 5, I know that is not an answer or a consolation. They are connected but it is the way Western medicine is set up.

Today, I went out and people chuckled at a patch on my jacket of Lisa Simpson saying The system is wrong.

I hope you get answers soon.

Sending my best wishes.

It is entirely possible that the b12 and folate serum levels will be elevated in the blood test and this test cannot be used to state that your b12 and folate levels are adequate. I would let them know about the multi-B and arrange for a retest in a couple of weeks.
