Taking Ferrous Sulphate Exhausts Me, Any Alternatives?

Hi All,

In February 2023 I requested a blood test from my GP as I felt generally awful. I had muscle and joint pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, irritability, hair loss, overall skin sensitivity and moderate acne that scarred. I was also losing my evenings as my body was so tired, I’d nap for hours after logging off from my WFH job.

I have now had a prescription for 200mg Ferrous Sulphate (2 x a day) and 5mg Folic Acid (1 daily) since March.

I haven’t improve at all, if anything I’ve gotten worse. However, I’ve also come to find out that my B12 and Vitamin D are a “little low” and have been SI Cyanocobalamin every other day for a few weeks.

My initial prescription ran out, and I found out that it hadn’t been put on repeat so for a few days I was without any ferrous sulphate. Having now picked up a new prescription a week or so later, I’ve realised that it exhausts me. Within 30 minutes of taking it just before lunch, I was asleep on the sofa. Like a deep, disorientated sleep and I lost nearly half a day. The same thing happened the following evening when I took it before bed, I woke up the following day having slept 12 hours but it didn’t feel like it at all. I wasn’t at all rested.

Has anyone found this also happened to them? Did switching to a different kind of iron tablet alleviate the tired/fogginess?

I use heme iron and this works well for me. I use the brand 3 arrows.
