Vit B12 too high?!!

PolyannaYorkshire profile image
β€’41 Replies

Just had my vitamin B12 blood test results back and and it's way over what it should be apparently 2000 ng(200-900) could this be causing my double visionand balance problems. My GP is not going to be very happy with me supplementing my vitamin B12. I understood you can't take too much B12 ... and my grandmother died of pernicious anaemia hence my taking the B12 drops as I didn't feel well at all she also had thyroid problems like me.

I would appreciate any comments on the 2000 reading. Thanks!!

No, you cannot overdose so high B12 will not cause unpleasant symptoms. What your body will probably do is flare up latent problems so it can heal them.

What's the backstory? Do you know why you're deficient?

My grandmother had PA (&died as a result) I had the symptoms of low B12 so started a spray supplement and now way over the limit!!

I doubt that a B12 spray will produce sufficient B12 for your body (I am not medically qualified).

I have P.A and my mother also had P.A. and had regular B12 injections but she died due to her GP who withdrew it and told her that she no longer needed B12 injections as her bloods were fine.

Due to GPs advice my mother developed stomach cancer and died.

I believe if someone has Pernicious Anaemia they MUST have regular B12 injections.

Mine are always over 2000 one GP told me that it was as high as the scale went but I don't know if thats for sure. Now I just warn them beforehand that the results will be around the 2000 mark πŸ˜€

I still get a lot of PA symptoms even though I self inject every month but they are not as sever as when I was having B12 injection every 2 months but I have very few days when I feel really well so its hard to say if some of this is cause or treatment, all I would say is I'm better with than without and I continue to work on my diet and vitamin intake to see if it makes any difference. Good luck and best wishes πŸ˜€

I self inject weekly under the care of a doctor. My b12 levels are over 2000 and have been for years. My doctor runs yearly blood tests to make sure everything looks good and it does.

My symptoms went into remission after long term weekly injections. High B12 levels aren’t harmful unless you are not supplementing as it is indicative of an underlying health issue.

No, its not possible. Such readings are not unusual when taking high doses of B12. You cannot overdose on B12 so there is no medical risk. Too much of some forms like methylcobalamin may cause anxiety or insomnia but no long-lasting effects.

Despite your high readings, if you have PA you may need injections, not tablets to alleviate symptoms. Serum readings are not necessarily indicative of effective treatment - alleviation of symptoms of the B12 deficiency is the only reliable guide to the right frequency and dosage.

I had the same thing happen. I was taking B12 orals and my B12 test came back over 2000. Because I had a prior P.A. diagnosis , megaloblastic anemia and symptoms , It proved to my GP that I was not actually absorbing it. Now that he has me on the injections most of my symptoms are going away or at least much improved. I have not been tested again since starting the injections so mine could be even higher now but it doesn't matter because I am still improving. GP is not worried about levels being too high while supplementing. High levels WITHOUT supplementing should be investigated.

Hi. When my thyroid levels weren't in their usual range I suffered with horrendous vertigo which caused me to be bed ridden and made my tinnitus worse. Also being deficient in D3 can also cause aches and pains and fatigue. If you haven't had your D3 tested recently and don't supplement it may be worth having it done.

PolyannaYorkshire profile image
PolyannaYorkshireβ€’ in reply toCatlover3

Thank you for your help I do supplement my vitamin D3. My GP reduced my levothyroxine so it could be my thyroid causing it

Catlover3 profile image
Catlover3β€’ in reply toPolyannaYorkshire

Oh no! Dr's are obsessed with ranges when you go slightly over but never seem to be bothered when its the other way. I gave up and have been self-treating myself for the past 21 years with natural desiccated thyroid. I do regular private blood tests to keep an eye on my levels and go by how I feel, not what the numbers say. They should be used as a guideline, not set in stone. Hope you get sorted soon.

PolyannaYorkshire profile image
PolyannaYorkshireβ€’ in reply toCatlover3

Thank you... I cannot believe how many people are living in pain etc ... And self medicating... Like myself... I too get private blood tests.. but this one was at my new gp practice as we have moved to Lancashire.

If you are not taking B12, a level too high could indicate a problem. But it is normal to have a high level when you are supplementing. B12 is not toxic and you will pee out what you do not need. I would look for another reason for double vision and balance problems. My mom had a brain aneurysm. It may be a problem with your eyes. I would see a doctor and an optometrist.

PolyannaYorkshire profile image
PolyannaYorkshireβ€’ in reply toHockey_player

Thank you so much for your help I had an MRI scan and it showed some inflammation or something that a consultant said he wasn't worried so my GP has referred me to a different one.

Mine also come back at that level as I SI, doctor just warned me of 'safe' levels but I think if you get injections they do come back around the 2000 mark anyway

Hi,

I am concerned for you. I think you've posted on here for more than a year and my understanding is that you've still had no treatment from NHS despite a family history of PA and typical symptoms.

I don't have a confirmed PA diagnosis but had many typical symptoms of B12 deficiency and didn't start to improve until I got B12 injections. I did try high dose oral B12 but it did very little for me.

There have been forum members who developed spinal damage from delayed diagnosis/inadequate treatment.
