Hi,

I am not medically trained or a scientist.

Does your GP know you have a cobalt allergy?

May be worth sending GP a brief letter stating you have a cobalt allergy and asking how that will affect treatment of your B12 deficiency. Keep copies of any letters.

Have you had allergy tests in the past that confirmed an allergy to cobalt? Just wondered how you knew you had the allergy.

I'm assuming you've seen an allergy specialist in the past.

Can you or your GP contact them to ask for advice on how to treat you?

Have you spoken to PAS who may be able to point you to useful info on how people with cobalt allergy are treated when they have B12 deficiency.

Your GP could contact a local haematologist and ask them for advice as they may have experience of treating B12 deficiency in people with cobalt allergy.

I don't know if there is anything about cobalt allergy on these websites below.

There is a helpline number that PAS members can ring.

if you join the PAS proper this will give you access to a lot of articles which includes some materials on people who are allergic to B12pernicious-anaemia-society....

I think the general way of dealing with it is through a long process of desensitising.

I'm also not sure that being allergic to cobalt necessarily means that you are allergic to B12 but it is certainly something that increases the risks.

"Allergy to B12, while rare, has been reported in the literature. I have attached links to two articles - one which describes a case report for B12 anaphylaxis and the second article describes a desensitization protocol for patient with B12 allergy."
