Has anyone experienced a burning mouth? I have B12 injections every 10 weeks and since the middle of May have had a burning mouth - on my tongue and roof of mouth - tried everything i.e. Corsydol, Listerine, changing toothpaste, two courses of candida medication, had blood tests (for anaemia, CRP and coeliac) and all ok, seen dentist and mouth is healthy (nothing to see, no lesions etc). It started a couple of days after having my B12 injection, so I discounted this. It is not as bad as when I first had it and am sort of learning to live with it now but anyone with anything similar have any advice?? Many thanks

Are your folate levels okay?
Hi Nackapan, thanks for coming back to me. I specifically asked to be tested for folate and they said all tests were satisfactory. I need to try and speak to a doctor to get more details, but at the moment it's a bit of a trial to speak to one with Covid etc. I guess I need to try and get a copy of the results.
I suffered for a couple of years with a “beef tongue” / Glossitis.
Tongue swollen & red raw, smooth raw patches & stinging.
I was passed around several specialists, who didn’t really come up with anything. Gave me various pastes, which did nothing.
BUT, blood tests showed deficiencies in Zing & Folate.
I’ve taken ZMA (Zinc & Magnesium) at bedtime ever since. Happy to say the problem has gone & to my amazement, my Tongue looks normal with taste bumps. I wouldn’t have believed those raw patches could ever grow back.
With regards to Folate. I continued to be Folate deficient in every blood test, despite being prescribed Folic Acid. It was only on here about a month ago that I read about Methyl Folate, so I take that now.
This can be B12 deficiency but can also be folate-related as Nackapan said.
I would ask for copies of your blood test results. My folate and ferritin were low but always within range. This was considered "normal, no action" until my gums started bleeding and my hair falling out. A 3-month course of both sorted this out but I had regular recurrences of low levels for a bout 2 years. This is now a regular check that the GP does to ensure I'm still managing okay.
Don't leave this until your folate gets below range - useful to know what your level is so that even if it's okay now, the GP will notice if it drops at all. Ideally, you'd want it in the top 1/3 of range. Ferritin too. Unlike B12, both of these need monitoring later to ensure they don't get too high either when supplementing, as that can also cause you problems.
I have had a burning mouth every day for years, despite frequent B12 injections and daily multivitamin and mineral tablet. For most people, symptoms will go, some quicker that others. Some people get stuck with a couple. Until more research is carried out, no-one will be able to say why or who this might be. Luckily, the Pernicious Anaemia Society are involved in research currently that I am certain will provide some of the answers.
Thank you Cherylclaire - that's really helpful
