After my last B12 injection over a month ago I noticed my legs had a burning sensation in the lower legs below the knees and the feet.
Does anyone know why this could happen? I had the burning sensation in my lower legs and feet on and off before the injection however I noticed it felt stronger after the B12. Wasn’t sure if it was a coincidence. My Gp is currently investigating the burning sensation and refer me to Neurology.

Would a Haemotologist be more useful? As they deal with b12 more. I think the neurologist may be just to rule out more serious causes like MS but I don’t have other symptoms of MS just this leg sensation lower limbs like I’ve got a sock on and burning lower legs and burning feet. This is on and off though and isn’t constant, so could be anything the cause. I don’t want to have countless pointless MRIs via neurology if I don’t need them and also if the cause is something else, it’s all very frustrating as I’ve got other health conditions and need a break from seeing consultants appointments, scans etc. it sometimes can get too much. My last b12 injection was 5 weeks late due to staff sickness in my surgery so I am starting to think this could be related to all of this. Will discuss with my Gp seeing her next week to go over all my blood results. Thanks for your help.
I had the burning feet and lower legs, also the feeling of having on thick socks/more like plaster casts on waking up. These are nerve damage symptoms most likely caused by your b12 deficiency. You need to continue loading doses until you have no more improvement or the nerves may not fully heal if it’s left too long as has happened with me. Go to your GP or write a letter with the information you will be able to find on here about guidelines for b12 injections. If you are unable to get more frequent injections please consider self injection as most of us on this forum have had to do.
Hi thank you for your reply. This does sound similar to me, I feel like my lower limbs have a sock on them it comes and goes and the on and off burning sensation in feet and lower limbs. I’ve written to my GP today to ask her to get me more loading doses. What if she doesn’t do alternate day injections as the nice guideline state she should? I have no clue where to start in getting the stuff to inject myself, can anyone help me with this? I’d also not have a clue how frequent to inject and what was safe etc. I’d need help so I didn’t do it wrongly? I’m happy to self inject just need to know how.
If you scroll down to the bottom of the page or type into the search box you will find information on self injection. Hopefully your GP will agree to trialing more loading doses or at least weekly injections. It’s worth asking if the nurse is able to train you to inject. In the early days of my treatment they were only willing to give me an injection every two months after the initial two weeks but I was really struggling, even needing to borrow a walking frame. Eventuality they agreed to weekly injections for a while, as I was due to go on holiday I asked about doing the injection myself while I was away, she got permission from my doctor to train me how to do it. This was a big help as once they said I had to go longer between injections I ordered them from Germany after finding how to do it from the very helpful admin on here.
Oh yes I’ve definitely had the spongey feeling so possibly this is a b12 issue after all. I’ve written to my Gp to ask for more loading doses not sure what she will say but I’ve quoted the nice guidelines to her for neuro symptoms. Guessing she will be aware of them already if she’s clued up. I am happy tp self inject but I’d really not have a clue how to or where to start in getting the stuff and doing it safely etc. how can I do this?
I have horrific burning and numbness in my back, arms and legs after an injection - I was told it's the nerves waking up. It really hurts and is quite frightening. I just have to hope that's the case, so interested to see what is said here...
I was only getting them every 6 weeks and just about surviving but I crashed horrendously after major surgery and lots of drugs - anaesthetics and antibiotics that deactive B12 - so now I'm self injecting every other day. x
