What causes tingling in the face?

What causes tingling in the face? I have been experiencing more often, in fact every evening a tingling sensation across my face. Usually on the left side. Feels like a crawling sensation under the skin! Initially tingled around the mouth but now experience it up my whole cheek and under eye.

I have a pituitary tumor. Daily left nasal bleeding. Visual floaters in left eye. Vitamin deficiencies (folate / Iron / VitD) and elevated homocysteine.

You need to see a neurologist.

I was under a neurologist at Kings but they concentrated on my memory issues and after having an MRI she said there was no obvious nerve damage & it must be folate related. In her letter to the GP She said she noticed my Homecystiene is at 30 when the normal range is 0-15. My folate has been on the floor for a year. Temporarily increases with Folic Acid. Issues with memory she thinks are related to stress even though I have said I’m not stressed?? Such as heading off on a journey and midway forgetting where I am going; getting in the passenger side of my car and waiting to be driven when I live on my own & am the only driver; putting my cat food in a mug instead of their tray; calling a colleague my name twice in a meeting, so many bizarre examples. All minimised, fobbed off & sent back to the GP who doesn’t know what to do. GP surgery has tried to repeat the Homecystiene test and first time sent it off in wrong colour bottle. Second time blood clotted before it got to the lab. It is the hospital’s responsibility to repeat the test. Needs to be in the lab within an hour, but they have been messing about for over a month now. I’m on the verge of a PALS complaint. When homocysteine is over 20, I have read your cardiac risk is 9x greater!! Sorry for the rant I just feel the hospital is not taking this seriously!

I am worried about a stroke as I have had a couple of episodes of left arm numbness & pain traveling down my ear / Jaw / neck and back of shoulders / chest. On one occasion with the facial numbness my chin cramped for around 10 secs where a visible deep dent appeared in my chin!! Again this didn’t raise an eyebrow!!

your situation is quite complex and there may well be more than one thing going on.

folate deficiency could certainly result in abnormal responses from the various nerves in your face ... as could B12 deficiency. However, as these are the result of what is going on with processes in your cells the effects are generally symmetrical whereas you are describing something that is assymmetric.

Have you spoken to the person treating your pituitary tumour to ask if this could be a result of the tumour pressing against a nerve?

A referal to a gastro might help to clarify what is happening with folate absorption - also, most folate is absorbed in the ileum meaning that having a folate absorption problem correlates to also having a B12 absorption problem.

Thank you so much for your helpful response I will speak to my Endocrinologist & my GP about Gastro. Much appreciated x

if your tumour hasn't been removed is it the prolactinoma version?i'm under investigation for acromegaly one and also don't absorb b12.I've always had floaters in both eyes and seem to struggle with folate levels despite taking 1000mg a day and have a lot of weird symptoms that come and go-my right eye and left nostril are running at the moment but not with blood and my nose has a strange tingly pain and is looking a little thickened out-my lips, tongue and upper teeth often tingle too

p.s i also get the neck and chest pains you describe and am getting dents above my eyebrows,i do think all these symptoms are because of the excess hormones that are being secreted ,can you talk to an endocrinologist if you are under the care of one?

OMG! Whilst your symptoms are horrible it is such a relief to hear from someone with similar issues! Are your floaters white circles that float up the corner of your eyes? My pituitary tumor is caused by excessive Prolactin. It’s a micro adenoma. Despite the issues with my folate they said I do not have B12 deficiency? I will defo speak to Endo as the sensation in my face is really worrying me!! Thanks for your reply and all the best with your symptoms. I am on Bromocriptine. What are you taking?

they are black circles and some wiggly worms!mine is growth hormone-i also had b12 in range(low folate) -i was put on metformin for high blood sugar 2 years ago,the nurse advised a b12 supplement so i took a 6000 mcg one for 3 months and when tested b12 had only gone up by 48 points and nurse said should have gone up over 1000 at least with that high a dose so i don't absorb it and was given loading jabs, they got rid of some of my symptoms -i had found this forum by then and have been self injecting as i wasn't offered any more jabs at surgery and i didn't ask-much easier to do at home anyway-and advice on here is brilliant.i'm waiting on blood test results at the moment, waiting for referrals has dragged things out-last endo said he didn't believe i was ill ,but the one i saw at end of feb is lovely, said i should have had further tests 5 years ago when i had a dexa scan and it showed bones were thickened and not genetic-mri at end of last year was clear but micro adenomas don't always show so he's sending it to a surgeon to look at,so finally some hope of a diagnosis-so not on anything yet-sorry this is a bit long!the bromocriptine should be helping your symptoms-your endo should give you advice about it-i wish you all the best sparkle, this is really not an easy dis- ease to deal with and hope you get those awful symptoms sorted

I don’t understand why Endocrinologists are so unhelpful and minimising of everything!! Thanks for your support & best wishes with your results!

my experience of it is finding the right one -ask for a second opinion-there's a lot of doctors out there that can't be bothered!

Have your calcium levels checked they can cause such symptoms and the para thyroid gland can be involved.

About two years ago, one of my very first symptoms was extreme 'tingling' or at least this strange 'nerve' feeling to the left side of my face. I actually didn't mention that particular symptom to my GP, as I then became very ill and other things took over. Anyway, at that time my folic acid, iron and B12 were extremely low and I was diagnosed with PA. That symptoms is now gone but I took supplements , loading doses etc as prescribed. I continue to take folic acid, and my B12 injections and now also VitD. It was a scary symptom at the time and I remember feeling so tired, it is one symptom I no longer get. Wishing you well Sparkle.

Thanks you for your reply! Yes the extreme fatigue is killing me!! They keep checking my B12 and saying there is no issue with that but they can’t explain my other deficiencies! I hope you are feeling much better now x
