Has anyone had experience with symptoms of Tardive Dyskinesia during treatment with b12 injections? I have not been diagnosed with it but one of my doctors (not treating my PA) uspects it and thinks it is related to my injections. she knows little about b12 deficiency and I had to explain to her why pernicious anemia means life long treatment. As she and I discussed my symptoms which I thought were related to stress, we realized that the last time I had noticeable symptoms was when I had my loading doses, and now again when I increased my injections from 1 per mont to 1 every 2 weeks. Symptoms involve excessive blinking which coincides with uncontrollable tongue movement and clenching/grinding teeth all through the day. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced it.

It's not something I've ever heard of in relation to B12 treatment. It is a very rare symptom of a B12 deficiency - ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/248...

Hi,

"the last time I had noticeable symptoms was when I had my loading doses"

Have you had your potassium levels checked? Some people experience a drop in potassium when on loading doses (Hypokalaemia).

I haven't found any articles that linked low potassium with TD though.

I am not medically trained.

I have noticed the opposite, when I forget to inject within hours I have uncontrolled jaw movement which inevitably leads to a bitten tongue or lip or cheek.

Yes it’s confusing I was told I TD. Due to a drug reaction by a Neuroolgist. I have head tilt to the left ? Dystonia which is the same thing. I’ve read those articles NIH ! Etc. That was even more confusing. I just don’t even know what to say ? It’s trial and error. Even for drs. They don’t really know. !!!

Also when my symptoms started I was not using B12 so it could not have been that. There is a dystonia society web site. There is a list of drugs that cause TD/dystonia. Even Zantac can trigger it. It seems to be those who have absorbtion issues. Valium ? There are so many drugs that cause it. Have you looked for the list of drugs.

Are you taking any antidepressants etc.

even those who are sensitive to anesthesia can trigger it. Carbon monoxide exposure. Long list

Sorry I keep replying. Also my symptoms are the head tilt.

I jibber When I have a stressful thought. Or when I bend down to reach for something. It’s so strange.

Did you have any antibiotics like ciprofloxin. ?? That’s what may have triggered my dystonia. I had bad reactions to it.

My doctor looked up my meds and saw no reaction. She said it wouldnt be the Lamictal I am on since reactions to it happen soon after starting. I have been on it over 10 years. My readingc though, this happens after long term use (but very little about Lamictal). I also had read that the use of b vitamins is helpful to patients with td. I think it is easier for her to blame it on PA since it and the injections are new And she doesnt understand it. I thought I would check to see if anyone else had experienced it. She gave me anxiety med since I thought it was related to stress. We will see how things go.

This is a very, very long shot, I'm no chemist, and I don't know what I'm talking about.

Note for readers for don't know... Lamotrigine is the active ingredient in Lamictal.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamot...

Lamotrigine is a weak inhibitor of dihydrofolate reductase,

Looking up dihydrofolate reductase :

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dihyd...

Dihydrofolate reductase, or DHFR, is an enzyme that reduces dihydrofolic acid to tetrahydrofolic acid

Since there is a relationship between folate and B12, could there be a connection via folate between your lamotrigine (Lamictal) and your B12 injections, and it is the effect on folate that is important?

Not what you're looking for?
