Sharps Collection

Has anybody been successful in getting their local council to collect sharps bins? I have a very large sharps box which is almost full! The last (smaller) one I had I took to Superdrug, but they were weird about it and it seemed they expected the service to be used by drug users, so I got some funny looks. Worried the council would want some evidence of my need for medical waste disposal.... probably overthinking it but what are others' experiences?

I asked my local council if they accepted sharps boxes and they told me no , and to take them to a local chemists. I phoned first and they told me there was no problem . So that’s where I take them now .

My local council will collect one sharps box a year, no questions asked nor details required. I arrange online the day for this and leave the box out in a prearranged place.

Have a look at your council’s website or phone to find out their policy as each is different so no use guessing!

My council asked no questions. I just phone them when it's nearly full. They tell me when they'll be picking it up and I leave it where we normally leave the bins. Then they replace it with an empty.

I filled in a form online and a person phoned me. Collected and offered a new bin free of charge. It was so big I’d have taken years to fill it.

My GP takes my sharps bins. I have to take it in though.

I'm assuming my local council will pick mine up when it's full. My father is a diabetic and and I phone the council to arrange for them to pick up the full one and leave a replacement.

I’m in Hampshire. In the last year my GP has put in two official requests to the council & I have put in three. None of the communication has had any response whatsoever, even in the negative. I have been to the local chemists all to no avail, so am at a loss to know what to do 🤷🏻‍♀️.

I use a needle cutter which securely stores the used needle and put the rest of the syringe in the household waste. It holds around a 1000 needles so even if you're self injecting twice a week it would last a good 9-10 years

My health board collects mine in Gwent. I ring a number, they arrange a day and time and they come out, collect and leave me a new one. Ask your GP surgery if there’s a similar arrangement where you are?

My GP supplied my sharps box free when I asked if I could be trained to administer my own B12 injection, they now prescribe me 3 ampoules every 24 weeks (8 weekly is the most they will give, I just get my additional needs from Germany) they also take the bin and replace it when it's full! Worth asking....
