I have injections every 5 weeks now for Vitamin B12 deficiency.
My latest blood test showed that my serum folate had dropped from 16.3ug/L two years ago to 6.1ug/L now. My haematocrit is below the range, my MCV above and there is a marker on the latest test to note that MCHC is above range.
I think this indicates that I am developing PA. When I spoke to a doctor at my surgery about these results she suggested that I take folic acid. I thought that taking these supplements could "mask" the possibility of PA. She also said she would refer me to a haematologist.
I would appreciate advice on whether to take the supplements - as my husband does my injections (the surgery provides the B12) I can have them when I need them as we also have a supply we bought from Versandapo.
Thanks.

Your folate isn't that low, so it shouldn't be a problem. But taking folic acid (400 mcg a day) should also not be a problem - and it would rule out a folate deficiency as being a problem.
If you take folic acid while you have an untreated B12 deficiency then it can mask one of the symptoms of the b12 deficiency (macrocytic anaemia). This is only a problem if you have an undiagnosed B12 deficiency and you have a doctor that believes macrocytic anaemia is an essential part of a diagnosis of a B12 deficiency.
Your doctor obviously knows that you have a B12 deficiency, so that doesn't apply to you. Taking the folic acid will not affect any testing for PA, but it might well fix your blood results.
