Result of blood test and ECG: no hyperthyroidism due to B12 confirmed.

I got the results from the blood test and ECG done last Friday. My ECG was normal 😊 and so was my tsh: 1.41 mU/L.

Because the tsh is in the range, the lab cancelled the T4 unfortunately, and I have no other way around at this time to change that. But I believe I am getting better.

The doctor re-tested my serum B12 although I mentioned I took B12 supplements last week. My B12 was at 344 pmol/L 3 weeks ago and is now at 374pmol/L so I suppose that’s good.

I was in poor shape last week due to severe reaction to Buspar medication ( for anxiety), and wasn’t able to advocate for myself as much as I wanted to. I don’t give up though and will try again.

Thanks to the support of several members of the forum ( GreyGoose, Marz, SlowDragon), I am better prepared for the next visit.

I will order to have the folate test done, as well as check my iron+ferritin and see if they agree to do the test to check the active B12 too.

I also had one question: 9 months ago I already knew my ferritin was in the low normal range and so I bought a supplement containing 400 mg of folate, iron bysglycinate and 1000mcg methycobalamine thinking it would help whatever was low in my body.

3 months later, I had another blood test and my ferritin was actually lower than it was before: from 44 ug/L it went down to 25ug/L for a range from 15 to 247ug/L.

But my B12 was above the range: at 732pmol/L and it had been at 530 pmol/L before for a range from 153 to 655 pmol/L.

Does this mean that I potentially have a problem absorbing B12 or too broad to mean anything?

Thank you so much again to everyone who read and had helped me. I feel more empowered in my road to healing.

Aline

Think you meant to post this on TUK

The serum B12 results don't mean a lot if you have been supplementing with high dose B12. You need to stop supplementation for 3-6 months to have any hope of getting a base-line.

If you felt the supplements were helping then you could continue with those - though I'd suggest cutting back if you were above range on them.

The difference reported at the start of your post is insignificant as it is within the margin of error (20%) that you would get by repeating the test on the same sample.

whilst ferritin is a good indicator of iron status it isn't definitive so I would suggest you take professional advice

Thank you so much for your message Gambit62.

I apologize if I posted in the wrong forum. I believe I could be suffering from a B12 deficiency and that I was misdiagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome when I indeed have a B12 deficiency. I have been looking for answers since last March.

I really appreciate your pertinent explanations and when I can, will go back to the doctor to investigate more.

I understand I will have to stop supplementing with B12 for 2 or 3 months before redoing a test, and this worries me as I wonder how I will feel once I stop the B12...

I saw a doctor in October and she did recommend I supplement with iron to increase my ferritin level to at least 70.

Thank you again and have a lovely day ( early morning here in Canada.)
