Can I use my methylcobalamin ?

My methylcobalamin hasn’t come in the mail and I am due my injection. I have last months still in the refrigerator but it expired about 3 weeks ago. It’s only good for 30 days they say . Can I use it until my new vial arrives ? Wondering if anything goes bad in it or is the potency just affected.

It doesn’t go bad. It just gets weaker and may not last as long.

I could be wrong, but I understood that after 28 days for most multi use vials, they should not be used. Once the seal is breached, the preservatives keep it stable for that long. After that, you risk infection. I don't know how much of a risk.

If it's still sealed, never used, it should be fine, probably for a very long time past the stamped expiry. Especially if kept in the fridge.

I use multi dose vials. I alcohol entire bottle well before first use. Then I swab the access before and after each use. I store double bagged in refrigerator and I toss after 28 days. I've only done this a few times. Now I use a 10 ml vial and I inject mostly alternate days so mine are always used up before the 28 day rule.

I know people who use cyanocobalamin multi dose vials, kept at room temp for far longer then 28 days. So far, no sign of infection from it. But I wouldn't do it if avoidable.

Hi

I now use bottles of 10 or 30 ml with a rubber stopper you can inject through. So much easier than vials.

When I was using vials I’d use it all and keep it in the insulin needles. ) as they are sealed)

I’ve never had a need to keep them in the fridge. Only away from sunlight.

I know my specialist never fridges hers or advises patients to but we all use bottles. ( they have circa 3 yrs expiry date.)

In answer to your question if you’ve say put cling film and semi sealed it , it should be fine just a tad less potent. It’s better than non at all!

Good luck I hope they arrive soon.
