Does lowered homocysteine mean B12 supplements are working?

Hey everybody,

I've posted on here a lot and if you want any background on my situation please check my previous posts.

Ive been b12 deficient for 10 years. When I was first diagnosed with low b12 (159) I was anemic and had very high homocysteine (29.1). I've been heavily supplementing for over 3 months now and I still have a good amount of issues (weakness in the legs, poor digestion, pins and needles, unable to gain strength or muscle, still anemic). When I first took a b12 supplement, my whole body tingled, twitched and experienced pins and needles so I could tell by the big reaction that I've been highly deficient.

My most recent test has showed my homocysteine dropped from 29.1 to 5.9 which is great. My MMA waa also normal. Does this mean the b12 is actually being used by my body? I'm nervous with the other symptoms remaining that my body cant use any of the b12 floating around in my system and my symptoms will continue.

Thank you

(folate, iron, thyroid all normal)

That lowering of homocysteine does mean that the B12 is working . 5.9 is an excellent result . As you have been deficient for 10 years , 3 months supplementation is not very long . I can only suggest that you try to be patient and continue your treatment . . You have achieved a lot by lowering your homocysteine so dramatically . That’s a huge health benefit . Very best wishes .👍

That is a good question. I had been wondering that myself. Prior to my B12 shots my homocysteine level was 19 and the last time it was tested it had gone down to 8. I don't know what the level is now but I remember my doctor was pleased with the new number.
