MMA test
Hello
Can anyone tell me if taking vb12 supplements will affect the result of an MMA blood test?
My active b12 assay was 35.1 but I’ve been using a vb12 mouth spray since last Thursday.
Thanks for any replies

I am not a medical professional but my understanding based on what I've heard from medical professionals is that if your body is properly utilizing oral and/or sublingual supplements, then the B12 would be working in your body the way it should and would bring down the MMA (and Hcy) markers. It is when your body cannot properly utilize the B12 from foods and/or supplements (or when intake of B12 is lacking) that MMA (and Hcy) levels start to climb. For many of us, even high levels of oral/sublingual B12 is not able to get into the cells so we have to inject
Does anyone know if small bowel bacteria overgrowth can cause high levels of B12. Mine is 2000. Always a little anemic. Feet nerve pain
All over body. Trouble swallowing. Spine issues etc. constipation. Trouble walking. Bad gait. Facial tremors. Heard B12 defiency can cause chorea like symptoms. Etc.
Puncho - would be good if you could start a fresh post for this question rather than posting on someone else's thread. Apologies to Allie72 as they are going to receive notifications that don't actually relate to the question they asked, and the post won't be visible to other forum members who may be able to help
In answer to your question though.
SIBO is known to be a potential B12 absorption problem which would lead to low B12 levels. It won't cause high serum B12 levels.
There is also some speculation that SIBO may be a trigger for the development of PA.
If you have had a B12 injection in the past because of SIBO then that would explain the high B12 - otherwise you probably need to look into liver and kidney problems - liver problems can cause dumping of stores of B12 raising levels - kidney problems can lead to a build up of B12 by reducing the rate at which the kidneys remove it.
It sounds like you may have a functional B12 deficiency - elevated serum B12 but not enough actually getting into your cells - the tests for this would be MMA and homocysteine - which look at products of two processes that build up if your body doesn't have enough B12 to recycle them into useful building blocks.
Sorry I’m New to this forum and I didn’t know where to ask a question I’m trying to figure it out. Thank you for replying I don’t even like my name I chose it just popped into my head because of a dog I had
Anyway whether I have B 12 supplements or injections or whatever Even if i don’t take any B12 Supplementation in any form my B 12 is always 2000 yet I have all these crazy issues
I asked Dr. today at a follow up visit could I have pernicious anemia or I’m not utilizing my B 12 causing all my nerve pain and etc etc.
She of course said no so now I got to figure out how to do the MMA Testing
do you know exactly what kind of test I would ask for if I did it and order it on my own.

If you are in the UK then St Thomas in London do a full B12 panel - including MMA and homocysteine.
