Advice please for H Pyloribefore gastro app

Hello, not posted much recently, but read daily. Could I ask for advice please on H Pylori. I had been experiencing a lot of pain under right rib and stomach since middle of May, weight loss, loss of appetite, nausea, no energy. Went to GP, middle of June, he referred me to gastro, appointment tomorrow. I asked GP for H Pylori test. This came back positive. I feel so let down as I asked my GP a few years to refer me for endoscopy, bearing in mind the connection between B12 deficiency and stomach cancer. My GP refused said the hospital would think she had gone mad.

Last week The GP wrote me a prescription (which I have not filled yet as I was on holiday). He prescribed Clarithromycin, Metronidazole and Lansoprazole. Marz, Polaris and a few others had mentioned H Pylori a few years ago but because I had no gastric symptoms at that time. I didn't pick up on it. I try to do as much research as possible and concerned about the poor success rate and want to give myself the best chance for success. I have started using high grade Manuka honey, pure cranberry juice, green tea, Kefir and also sprouting broccoli seeds. Can anyone give me any advice on these antibiotics and supplements which can increase the success. I am so frightened that this could have caused stomach cancer as I am now quite frail and compromised with the b12 nerve damage. Sorry for length of post and a bit rambling. I have no confidence in the medical profession or their ability to put connections together. Thank you. Potter 5

I've been told by a doctor antibiotics for several weeks will sort it. Quite a cocktail though. Remember alot of the population have this with no ill effects and do not know. Get the treatment. You can only move on with the facts you have now. Antibiotics csn give side effects. I usually have plain bio yoghurt and rest while on them. What you ate taking spuds very good. I've heard broccoli seeds very nutrition. Hope you manage the treatment okay.

I have had this twice. Second tine had pre cancerous changes in my stomach. But it has been eradicated. Follow up test was clear. You really must take those anti biotics. I don't know anything about supplements to help but first step is get rid of the h pylori. Only certain antjbiotics work to eradicate it and that is why they have been presribed. I wouldn't really try to get rid of it any other way.

As much as you feel reluctant, I agree that you should take the antibiotics.

Metronidazole is often used in cases where all and I mean all gut bacteria must be removed. It is often used to clear a C Diff infection.

For me, after literally years on antibiotics including clarithromycin and metronidazole plus flucloxacillin and amoxicillin I had extensive investigations for similar pains you describe.

I was diagnosed with unknown malabsorption for B12 and folate. I had been suffering from neuropathy and was told that I had to go on a course of probiotics. Little did I know that I would be part of a band of people whose gut flora never returns and I have been in the probiotics for years.

They take about 8 weeks to start having any really noticeable impact but did work for me. The B12 damage has been reversed only so far and I can still not absorb this.

My consultant prescribed Symprove. This is a probiotic liquid that is taken daily as soon as you wake and before you eat or drink anything. This is not I the NHS. It costs circa £55/month. You could also try Probio7 from Holland and Barrett. It’s cheaper, contains all but one of the bacteria in Symprove, plus a few others and was just as effective for me.

Weight loss is serious and if you have been reviewed and assessed for possible cancer - forget just stomach cancer and this was clear, try to move on.

Thank you for replying GGourmet. I was with the consultant this morning and he is going to do the camera test on me in about three weeks time. I had a ct scan done last year and that was clear but he thinks I might have an ulcer. I try to research as much as possible and everything I read suggested that taking probiotics while on the antibiotic treatment helps with side effects. I have been taking Natural Kefir from supermarket the last few weeks and have bought on line a goats milk Kefir, again not cheap. £43 for three weeks supply, but does seem to be good quality. I told the consultant I was going to take it while on the treatment, he said not to bother, and take it after the treatment but I think I should take it. Trying to ensure I get best chance of success. So interested to know what others think of this. He also said he wanted to check for celiac and said to go back on gluten even while taking the antibiotics. I explained to him that if I eat gluten my ankles lock and my calves go into spasm, excruciating pain. He said take the gluten anyway. Again, I dont think I can cope with side effects of antibiotics and what may happen when back on gluten, so will leave that until later in the week. I am always looking for connections as to why I became b12 deficient and feel really let down as this should have been investigated years ago. I have permanent nerve damage in feet and legs, axonal loss and small fibre neuropathy.

I will look into the probiotics you mention as I think it is something I will take long term. I was with GP yesterday and asked the locum if amoxicillin could be used rather than metridonidazole as I had read it was quite nasty. First dose dose taken this morning. I am so thin, small boned but my wrists are like a little skeleton. 8st 2lbs. and really need to put on weight.

I hope you continue to make improvements and that the probiotics keep you well, thank you again GGourmet.

Kind regards Potter

Amoxicillin should be avoided. It’s rarely effective against anything. If you are prescribed Metronidazole I suggest taking this because it is being used usually to shift extremely stubborn bacteria.

Probiotics, whatever they are, should always be taken on an empty stomach and first thing. Never ever take probiotics with food or within 10-20 mins of food as this triggers acid production which destroys the probiotics before they enter the small intestine.

Thank you again GGourmet, oops, I have started the antibiotics, the amoxicillin was on the first line treatment list. Hope I haven't done the wrong thing here. Thank you for information about when to take probiotics I will try and take it first thing in morning and before I take the antibiotics. Again many thanks. Kind regards Potter

Sorry just posted this to myself. 🙂
