Folate problems

Hi This is my first post on here, someone on Thyroid UK told me to ask for advice on here.

I have M. E. and Hashimoto's, as yet untreated. I am gf. My GP surgery is worse than useless. I have, if I'm lucky, annual blood tests. Last year my Folate level was 2.6 (3.9-26.8) B12, 333 (197-771). My B12 levels have been much lower and I take Jarrows sublingual which raised it. I was given Folic Acid, which I will not take so bought a Solar Folate, Folacinin? Probably spelt wrong, awful brain fog. I didn't take the full dose as I have bad reactions to medication and B vitamins especially. I felt ill, sick and my anxiety levels went through the roof, it was awful. I haven't taken anything since.

I now need some help I am anxious, can't sleep, have digestion problems, sore gums and mouth, sweating, pins and needles, unsteadiness. I am a mess. Last comment from one of the Doctors, we only have Locums, was it's M. E... Our surgery is run by a business, we have to use a telephone hub to try and get appointments, often takes hours to get through and I am housebound but telephone consultations are rare. Sorry about the long post! But I cannot rely on Doctors so need some help as to what to do. Thankyou for reading.

Folacin is another name for folic acid.

If folate in pills doesn't work, try eating edamame beans. Or any other beans or pulses. Plus leafy green veg.

What level doses of B12 and folic acid are you currently taking?

Your issues sound to me more like B12 neurological symptoms. I’m thinking you need B12 injections as supplements don’t seem to be enough and then enough folic acid to balance but not more than 5 mg daily.

Do you take a daily multivitamin for the other minerals and metals that are needed to support metabolism and DNA methylation?

If you are already Gluten Free, have you also tried going dairy free as the casein protein in dairy is similar to the gluten protein?

As you are supplementing, Forget further blood tests. You want any B12 results to be much higher if you are supplementing or on injections. Especially as you are exhibiting neurological and the subsequent psychological symptoms.

Do you keep a logbook and make daily assessment of all symptoms? You need to build up some evidence to give a list to your GP when you ask for stronger dosages.

Like many of us, you will be Fobbed off as a total hypochondriac, but ask for your list of symptoms and scores to be included in your medical record at each visit. This worked for me and it might just work for you.

You can also use the logbook to sort out dietary issues as there is a 3 hour to 5 days lag because the gut and hepatic loop are involved.

Not what you're looking for?
