Methylation

Hi I haven’t been on here for a while because working with a private nutritionist/ practitioner.I have just had results back on a test from Genova on a full nutrition. The results

Say a high need for B12 and all Bs and magnesium as not methylating.

I have been taking a good quality multivitamin and extra magnesium.

Three years ago after stomach issues my B12s were going down and the GP

gave me injections after I pleaded with him,

as all my symptoms related to low B12. I then went on to self inject after seeing a private doctor. Anxiety was bad but I now realise my Vit D was very low.

Since I’ve been working with nutritionist haven’t been injecting but

she’s been trying to sort my bloating stomach. I find if I have a busy day the next is wiped out for me and get a lot of symptoms back. I can’t exercise

like I used to. I have tinnitus, red sore tongue, sometimes tingling in hands/ arms.

The nutritionist has me taking sub lingual B12, high magnesium, methylfolate and multivitamin.

I’m concerned from a food poisoning incident and lots of antibiotics my ability to make B12

or intrinsic factor is limited. I take HCL as after a test shows very low stomach acid.

My question is if I go for a full B12 /intrinsic factor/parietal cells private testing will it still show if I have a problem ,(as I have been supplementing). (3 years ago I asked GP to do this but said NHS wouldn’t do it as B12 not low enough . I think 160 at time). I go private now for testing.

Also what does methylation actually mean?

Thank you in advance. I know you all have lots of experience in this area.

Methylation, in the context that your 'nutritionist' is using it, is nothing more than a trendy nonsensical term. There is no way at all that a 'nutrition' test can tell you anything at all about methylation.

Believe me. If you 'weren't methylating' you would be dead.

I would ignore the 'nutritionist'.

If having the B12 injections made you feel better - then start them up again.

Keep taking the methylfolate (as long as it's not more than 1000 mcg a day). It can't hurt unless you are B12 deficient.

High dose magnesium can cause horrible stomach problems and it's very unlikely that you actually need them. I'll bet the 'nutritionist' didn't actually do a blood test to see if you were deficient.

Yes, taking B12 supplements will mess up the results of a B12 test (serum B12, or Active B12) as well as MMA or hCys. The IF antibody test shouldn't be affected if you leave a week between an injection and the test.

Food poisoning and antibiotics cannot affect your stomach's ability to make HCl or IF. They can affect the makeup of your intestinal flora. The way to fix that is to take probiotics. Many here have found Symprove works very well. It is expensive, but it works as an initial fix, then I use Bio-Kult to keep things OK.

Taking too much Betaine.HCl was, I think, responsible for ruining the balance of my gut flora. That's why I use lime juice with meals.

Not what you're looking for?
