I think you can from stool sample. So you need the hospital notes to find answers to your questions. Hope you get some answers soon so you can get on track

Leigh,

think the stool sample is more likely to be about looking for an infection that would affect absorption.

if you have injections then B12 absorption in the gut is irrelevant. Are you having problems with other nutrients?

Iv giv up try understand b12 i thought if i had ileum removed il need more but nobody knows why i had the ileocolic resection at 14 so he said sample will show if iv got ibd even if its in remission then theyl go from there as its dated ten years after the first one i know about .I just want the anxiety go and motivation back iv been like this two years made worse as family avoid me sinse having mental health and i know its a big part of it iv neen heartbroke over this but still say i mither and can go out if i want so they dont ring or come for weeks at a time or months sinse my sister rang and feel iv im to get better i need to walk away due to the anxiety i have around them im just so tired mentally and physically i cant think straight sorry for rant ijust feel like i got ill and lost everything i new since happy new year to everyone x

Leigh, hope that you find the answers.

If you are on injections then absorption problems in the ileum are no longer the issue as B12 is going directly in to your blood. However, getting B12 i to your blood is only one bit of the B12 story. It needs to get from your blood into your cells and then be used by your cells. So, for you the next two steps are obviously going wrong. Most likely to be the second part of the story - the B12 going from your blood into your cells.

Gambit

What would cause that problem, the B12 not going from blood to cells?

Thanks, Sita

nobody really knows - my personal theory is that its latent genew that get activated by high serum B12. Quite possible that there is more than one mechanism involved but exactly what that mechanisms might be involved just isn't clear.

Thankyou for making it so clear why didnt he know thats wat i ment but with no definate reason noted hes guessing with to many reasons for surgery the 2nd time that it may or may not be relavent i hope the stool test can give sum clue as iv looked everywere for other reasons for it besides ibd but nothing else comes up to give a clue thanks alot

to be fair B12 isn't that well understood by many and he's a gastro rather than a haematologist so he'll be more likely to understand the issues that affect the gut but not necessarily have gone to the next level of processes.

Unfortunately even hematologists sometimes don’t understand B12. I have an oncologist/hematologist who will not give me a PA diagnosis or a prescription for B12. When I was first tested my B12 was 472 (200-900), but I had been taking an oral multivitamin for years with B12....It is very hard to find doctors or even nutritionalists who understand the entire B12 diagnosis and treatment!

Does your doctor not give you any medication for Anxiety and depression or hasn’t he/she deferred you to a mental health professional who can help you a lot with the Anxiety and depression side so you can then sort out other problems
