Sorry if this has been done a million times before.... I’m coeliac (proper, not elective) and went to my gp as in a private blood test my B12 had come back as 168pmol. He reran the test which came back at 246 ng/l which seems to be a different measure and he said all was normal.... is it? I’m so blinking tired!!!!

Hi Fhikn.

Don't have time to write a full reply right now but it might help if you read the reply I left to a similar question quite recently, in this reply below:

healthunlocked.com/pasoc/po...

The bottom line is that if you have Coelic disease, then you are likely to suffer from absorption problems (vitamin B12, Folate, iron and Vitamin D are the main culprits). So,you are a prime candidate for B12 deficiency.

Furthermore, serum B12 test is not reliable as a sole measure of whether B12 deficiency exists, or not. GP should be looking at your symtpoms - the full clinical picture - and not just your blood test results.

Here's a copy of the guidelines your GP should be following, in terms of investigations, diagnosis, and treatment (which many GPs appear not to have read).

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi... (British Committee for Standards in Haematology (BCSH) Guidelines: Treatment of B12 Deficiency and Folate Disorders)

Hope this helps...
