I was recently diagnosed with pernicious anemia following testing. The tests included B12 level where I was low. To my knowledge I was not tested for folate level. I have begun weekly shots of B12 and soon to be transitioned into monthly. My next doctors appointment is 3 months away. Two questions: Shouldn't I have the B12 levels tested soon to see if the shots are working? And, shouldn't the folate have been tested?

Thanks, Ron

Yes , you should have had your folate tested . I would just buy some folic acid tablets on Amazon 400 ug strength — A year

s supply is cheap . Once you have started the injections there is absolutely no point in testing B12 . You will know if the injections are working because you will feel a slight improvement . Don’t be impatient though . It might take some time . It’s more usual to have 6 shots over 2 weeks, as a ‘loading dose’ ‘If you have neurological symptoms, the loading doses should continue until no further improvement is experienced .

Lapaz4 - it sounds as if you aren't UK based from the loading regime you describe. Different countries have different protocols for treating B12. Most of what is talked about on this forum is the guidance relevant to the UK.

Serum B12 isn't going to be particularly useful at the moment. Each injection will have put about 3 years worth of B12 in to your blood - most of this will gradually be removed over time by your kidneys - but exactly how long that takes depends on the individual.

In the US it is less common to have a folate deficiency because foods are often fortified with folate. However, it would be useful to monitor as if you have a problem absorbing B12 that can also affect folate and other vitamins and minerals.
