Medichecks Results

Hi All, I an finally going tomorrow to see my GP - a new one as mine is booked up until 20th April. If she does agree to give me injections due to medic heck results confirming antibodies for IF and Gastric Parietal cell Ab, do you think I need to ask to take folate? I don't understand these and thought someone on here might. Results are

Active B12 52pmol/L (25.1 - 165.0)

Folate (serum) 3.2 ug/L (>2.9)

The only ones starred in full blood count were

HCT 0.454 (0.33 - 0.45)

Red cell count 5.24 x10^12/L (3.95 - 5.15)

I hope someone on here who is more knowledgeable than me can understand these results. Thanks in advance.

A high hematocrit with a high RBC count and high hemoglobin indicates polycythemia.

This article explains more about polycythemia.

active B12 is in range so unlikely you are currently B12 deficient

folate is a bit on the low side but still in range.

Had you been supplementing before the IFA test? - this is a circumstance that can result in a false positive, meaning that the result would be inconclusive.

Do you have any earlier tests showing a downward trend in B12 and folate levels? This would be useful in demonstrating that you have an absorption problem ... and that it would be better to start treatment now rather than when you are definitely deficeint to avoice complications that could come from being 'sub-clinically' deficient.

Hi Gambit62, many thanks for your reply. No, I have never supplemented with B12. I understand that although it looks like the active B12 is in range that it is in fact low. Apparently if it is below 70 then they give B12 injections at St Thomas’s Hospital. I read this on a post on this forum somewhere. I saw the GP this morning and she says she will have to ask the partners at the practice to see if they will allow injections after a positive IF result as it was not the normal protocol to do an IF test if B12 was above 190 so I will get a call on 5th April with their decision. She didn’t say if she accepted that a positive result meant I have PA. she also said I may only get the mo they doses and not loading doses when B12 was not low

I'm not a medic. The results you quote don't appear to me provide clear cut answers -just some things to look into. I'd suggest asking for a referral. PA seems a strong possibility given that you are positive for IFA, and have hashimotos. However it is possible that other things are also going on.
